How do you teach it?

I can't get Millie or Ozzy to play fetch to save my life. For awhile Ozzy almost had it. He was to the point where he would run after the ball and then with a lot of coaxing he'd bring it back over to me, but he lost interest really quickly. I just think it's a fun game and would be a good way for them to get a little extra running in.

Any suggestions? Millie watches the ball, runs over in the general direction, and then gets distracted.

Here's another forum with the same question... you're not alone trust me. Although lately we've found our boy does better with a frisbee but he rarely brings it back to us

Try putting the toy in your dogs mouth and say "drop" while you take it from him then, treat and praise. Do that a couple of times, and everytime your dog has something in its mouth, the command "drop" should make him/her drop the object. Thats step one. Practice in a small area, maybe inside a house with no distractions. Wave the object around to get him or her hyper then throw the object, he or she should run after it. Once retrieved, crouch and he or she should come to you.....say drop, and he or she should drop it. You can also treat and praise everytime your dog comes within distance with the object. Do so in the beggining if they are having a hard time. Playing fetch should be a treat within itself.

I use pretty much the same method however, I use about 6 different toys. Everything from tennis balls to stuffed squeaky animals, rubber bumpers, anything that I can find that is different in texture and maybe ever sounds.

From there a small area of the yard or even a small room, and try to get the dog excited over the toy and throw it, no big deal if he doesn't bring it back, you got 5 more so get him excited and throw it. Eventually he will chase and return the toy he likes. By doing this you also accomplish a few things. You get to learn what his most enjoyable toy is as well as his least enjoyable toy. If you decide to train with some distraction for STAY or some such you can then use those toys as distractions. By knowing his favorite toy you can also use it as a reward while training, cause ending training with a fun game always makes the dog want more later.
