This one's very direct... Baer doesn't understand fetch, when he's in the mood, he'll chase the ball or stick and pick it up, come running back towards me... and run past me. How can I get him to bring it back to me? I've tried holding a treat and saying "ok, come" when he's near me with the item but he'll run off, drop it and then come to me. I've tried playing with a leash on, but he is not having fun time with the leash on... Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If you figure it out, let me know. Johann does the same thing....or he runs in the opposite direction.

Start Slow

Start in a hallway with the doors closed. Johann will not be able to run past you when he comes back. When he gets to you, take the ball and praise, praise, praise. Try opening a door or two in the hallway once Johann is comfortable giving you the ball with the doors closed. The key is to take it slow and not rush to the backyard.

If you get to the yard and Johann reverts to old habits of running past you, DON'T chase him to get the ball. He will think it is a game. Just take a step back and try fetch in the hallway again.

If nothing else works, try keeping two balls. Throw the first and make him drop it before you throw the second. His reward for bring the ball back is always another ball. Good Luck!

If he is like my girl he loves to chase it. She learned (eventually) that if she does not bring it all the way back to me then it could not get thrown again :) So unless she brings it right to me and sits in front of me I do not throw it. Which means I never go get it after she has left it somewhere (we lose a lot of balls :) ), except when it is time to go and then it is "mine" and put away. I have not found boxers to be great at retrieving :)
