Fencing options

Help! We need to find out what kind of fences have worked for other people. We moved to a new neighborhood 6 months ago and need to get some sort of fence up for our Maggie and Brady. We first thought about a vinyl picket fence, or chain link, but our skin kids like to circle around the house and it doesn't seem fair to them to fence them in too. We are now exploring the underground fence option, but want some opinions on the subject. Do Boxers jump fences? Like if we had a 4 ft. fence. I really don't want to get a privacy fence, but I'm starting to think that is going to be our only option. What's the word on the underground fences?????

FYI electric fences are NOT allowed to be discussed on boxerworld. I have a 6 foot wood fence that works great. I still don't leave my boxers outside since I know Jasmine can jump the fence if she really wanted to. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Thanks for the info on the electric fence. I wasn't crazy about the idea anyway and neither was my hubby, but we wanted to consider all options.

__discussion of deliberate use of devices or practices that cause or have the potential to cause physical trauma to a dog. Boxerworld does recognise that people do have genuine questions regarding training tools (prong collars, mousetraps etc) and methods, but we support and promote wholeheartedly positive training and behavior management, that is, teaching the dog what to do by using positive methods, not teaching a dog what not to do by causing it discomfort and pain. Any threads which appear to promote "negative" training and methods will be closed.

We have a 8ft privacy fence and it is wonderful.

Don't like underground fences for a number of reasons, never would use them. My backyard is fenced in by a 4 and a half foot chain link fence, my boxer has never jumped over, but since it bends at the bottom, he has pushed under a few times. I did finally get up some privacy fence, it's the best, can't jump and it does not give and bend at the bottom so no more going under.

If you want to be able to let Maggie and Brady outside on their own, then go with the privacy fence. Boxer certainly can jump - some will even clear a six foot fence - not all do, but they're far more likely to try it with a lower one (and then you've got boxers that *know* they can jump the fence, and would try the higer one).

Never heard of an underground fence. Presumably its some sort of electric shock device? If that's right - well, its just not a nice option.

We have 4 ft picket at the back, 6ft privacy at the front, both are great and our boxer is not a jumper. Some dogs can clear a 4 ft fence, so maybe you can bring them to a friends yard and test them. Having said that provided they are supervised when they are outside you probably won't have a problem with them jumping the fence. Our boxer in his first home before we adopted him was left outside uattended for extended periods and would dig his way out under their fence out of boredom and searching for company. He has never once tried to dig under our fence, becuase I don't leave him outside on his own for extended periods.

Good luck with your decision, your boxers will be very happy when you fence in the yard.

I guess I never thought the underground fence would be an electric shocker. We have a bark collar for our beagle that puts off a sound, so I was thinking it would be along the same lines. I feel like a dummy!

Tess cleared our 6' solid wood fence like it was only a shoe box and she was only 6 months old at the time. Step 1 was to attach a roll of plastic fencing about 10" in diameter along the top of the fence and running the full length. We used the green stuff so it blended in with life (rather than the ugly orange). The purpose of this is that it will deter the dog from jumping as it gives the appearance of a much larger/wider barrier (works like a charm). Then for asthetic reasons, I put up a few 8' trellis with fast growing vines along the area I share with my neighbor (this was where Tess was "visiting" when she became superdog). The rear fence is covered by hardenbergia, an evergreen vine that blooms Dec-Mar w/tiny purple flowers to adorn an otherwise dreary winter (and there are no bees that time of year). The hardenbergia has turned a 6' fence into a 7 !/2' green barrier that I find to be much preferable to look at than the neighbors, and I can get dressed in my bedroom without having to close the blinds all the time. I hate feeling like a goldfish..............

I wouldn't put anything past a boxer - we had a mutt rescue that actually climbed the tree to get over that same fence and Tess was right on her heels. Hmmmmm, no more branches within jumping distance - the things we do to keep our babies safe.
