My 2 boxers, Jakey and Maggie, are now a little over a year old. Until now we have kept them on chains in the yard just to go potty. They are never left on the chain longer than to go potty. We are looking at fencing in the backyard for them now. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I am looking at either the in ground or wireless fences. Does anyone have any thoughts on these for boxers? I am sure that Maggie will be easy to train as she has gotten off the chain a few times and is pretty easy to catch. Jakey on the other hand! WHEW!! I did get him neutered a week ago and he seems to have calmed down some, but Im still worried about him learning where his boundaries are. We have almost 2 acres in town that I would love to let them run in but dont trust at all that they will stay in the yard or not try to dig under or jump over a fence. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Just to give you a bit info on the underground fences, my friend's dad had one in there yard and it worked pretty good for their smaller dog, but the big dog figured out he could just run right through it with just a small minor annoyance. If you are going to put a fence up I would do a chain link fence and run a small wire near the bottom that is electric. Just a few taps from it and they will soon learn the fence is off limits. (This is how my uncle did all his fencing and it kept all his dogs right where they needed to be.)

Before anyone gets in trouble, we can't talk about invisable fences or whatever they call them that shock the dog when they get too close.

We had underground fencing years ago when our labs were alive, and as the previous poster mentioned, they got used to the "zap" and would just run through it. It also requires quite a bit of training with the dog as well.

Although we are on 5 acres in the country, I don't want Stryker running loose when I'm not home for safety reasons and because our neighbors around us have livestock and horses I don't want him bothering them. We (and by we, I mean my husband :)) built a wood fence around our large backyard using the prefab'd 6' fence panels with lattice tops. It looks great and now when we are gone Stryker and our little dog, Kit can both go in and out the doggie door to the backyard as needed.

MIGHT bear mentioning again ''' " ELECTRONIC TRAINING DEVICES ARE PROHIBITED " since it is still being discussed ......

there are lots of OTHER options , but they wont get that info if this thread is closed .... PLS stop talking about electric fences & underground fences ... the OP would like to hear some USABLE advice ... :) :) :P

Since we can't mention certain devices then you can always get a 6 foot fence and put 6-8 inches of it in the ground. Keep it inspected and feel up any holes that might have got started. But i have heard if you will pit a sand pit in our yard the dogs will typically choose there to dig in instead of the yard.

we needed to replace 6 panels of our wood privacy fencing - since the run around 30-40 each , i was pricing them & chatting with a clerk at lowes ... he told me about " broken panels " that where 10.00 !! we sorted through them , most just had a knot hole or a broken piece - so i bought the 6 i needed & 1 extra ( very broken for 5.00 ) for "parts" and basically did all of it for what 1 would have cost !

u can always call & ask how many they have ~ and do it in sections as u get the fencing.
