I have to add my two cents to this thread. I have a 13 year old female who I ADORE. I wonder if there will ever be another dog for me. I think your vet has a bias against boxers. HE might believe Tyson was the exception not the norm in Boxers but after reading all these threads I know he is wrong. I would get another Boxer and a different vet if I were you guys.
Good luck. I believe a good dog is a product of good upbringing. If you did it with Tyson you obviously have what it takes to raise an equally wonderful dog.

I figured I would try posting this picture here instead of starting a new thread. I hear that the females are more independant but how independant are they? I'm asking because I have always been partial to female dogs but would like an affectionate and social animal. I haven't owned a boxer before so a really independant boxer maybe still be more affectionate than any of the dogs I have had. I know there are really sweet females out there but I want to know what the extreme it.

thanks,

Tylina

I have had 4 boxers over the years. Two males and two females. The female I have now is extremely affectionate and was an easy dog to raise and train. The female before my present dog was smart and independent not to mention head strong. I had always heard the females were the smarter sex. (of course:D ) It was not until I found this site that I read how the males are typically more affectionate and "clingy". I think it varies just like with people. I have read and reread how you should tell the breeder what you are looking for. It makes sence to me.

:p I find this thread very interesting. One point I don't recall being mentioned is barking. Is it true that females are more inclinded to bark at strangers and be more alert to people coming near or into the house?
Our experience with the male is that they are much more sedate. In fact don't seem to pay much attention to strangers coming to the house, however when they come in all they want to do is lick them and get petted.

Enjoy all the discussion it is excellent input.

Barron is a wonderful guard dog and will bark at the slightest noise he hears outside, or at the door. However, he craves attention from everyone who walks in the door.

i have 2 males and i female...1 of the males and the female are equally "velcro'd" to me most of the time!!!
an interesting observation i've made: the 2 "velcro"dogs are both rescues!! my male i bought and have had since he was 8 weeks old is much more independent. he's never known a bad day in his whole life...lots of love, good food, vet care, warm home, tons of toys etc. the other 2 had very little of any of this until being adopted by me. it's as if they realize they got a second chance and they do all they can everyday to thank me. i see a direct correlation between the amount of neglect the fur kids have suffered and the 'velcro"effect!!
i think the most important thing is finding the puppy right for you regardless of sex. tell the breeder the traits important to you and see which pup they recommend. i did that when i got jake...i said i wanted a friendly but mellow male because i wanted him to become a pet therapist (i work in a nursing home and he can come to work with me...everyone loves him!!!!). i knew a mellower pup would be easier to handle in this situation. they told me which of the pups they thought fit this description...they were right on!!! he was fun, beautiful, sweet, snuggly but independent and not hyper at all! he became a Canine Good Citizen at 6mos. and we're working towards our therapy certification!!!
also...i agree with everyone else~GET A BOXER!! you won't ever replace tyson...you'll just find another to love in a whole different way!!!

Hello "Chubby Hubby" -- I too, am from Brantford, Ontario!!! SMall world. Yes, our Tyson (male) was VERY sedate and was happy to just lick anyone who came by; he didn't bark either -- one night someone tried to kick our front door in, and Tyson slept (or should I say, snored) right through it! Friends of ours have said that their female was very alert and would bark if anyone came near (even at the neighbours lunchbox, ha, ha, ha....), but that their males have always been rather docile!
