female in heat?

We have a male and female boxer which we would like to breed. Our female is a year old and as far as we could tell never went into heat. She never had any bleeding unless it only lasted for hours because she was never left for more than a few hours. She is now showing signs that she may be pregnant. Her nipples are sticking out more and her back end is staying kind of swollen. I am going to call the vet in the morning but I was hoping maybe someone would have an idea if this is possible tonight.

Your female is still a puppy so I sure hope she's not pregnant. The best thing to do is get her to a vet to find out ASAP and if she's not then you really really need to not breed her until she's at least two and has had the proper health testing. It is possible for her to be pregnant and you have never noticed she was in heat but it can be very detrimental to the dog physically and mentally to have puppies so young. I hope for her sake she's not. Good luck.

When they begin to go in heat their "pee-pee" as we call it can look swollen and their breasts can start to swell also. Keep your male away from her! Keep them in separate rooms. She can get pregnate for up to 21 days with one heat cycle. He will try everything to get to her, they have been known to chew right through doors. And scoulding him wont do a thing. It would help to put a doggy diaper on her. At one year a female boxer is not fully grown. It would be very bad for her health if she were to get pregnant now.

It's not just the boys! At the right point in the cycle she will be just as eager to get to him as he is to get to her, so do be extremely careful with both of them. Unfortunately a lot of accidental breedings occur in this kind of situation.

Female in Heat

I'm sure that just as in people, all dogs can develope differently. But, female boxers don't develope fully until their at least 2 years old. Until that time they shouldn't breed..early breeding can cause alot of serious health issues to her.

In relation to your concerns...our female is just now turning 2 years...she's 28 months now. She didn't have her first heat until she was about 16 months old. It lasted about 4-6 weeks (I can't remember exactly). But we also became concerned that she may have become pregnant for the same reasons you mentioned - staying swollen, nipples slightly larger, etc. We were told that was part of her changing body. Kinda (but not exactly) like when a young girl goes through puberty Anyway..we were worried, but it turned out she wasn't pregnant...just normal changes. She had her 2nd heat this past Christmas, and is due for her 3rd anytime now.

We put a doggy diaper on her, that helps alot. During that time it's always obvious to us (with people we come in contact with) just who's a doggy person and who isn't LOL. Those who aren't doggy people laugh at the diaper and think we're crazy...those who are understand.

I really hope your baby isn't pregnant. Like the others said, she's too young and needs to have the proper health testing done first. She might be showing signs of becoming in heat. I believe what you mentioned were all symptoms of being in heat, minus the bleeding. I hope you get it figured out soon!!

Your female may also be having a false pregnancy. My female had that with the same symptoms: swollen vulva, swollen nipples, even milk from her nipples. Keep us posted.
