Our year and a half old boxer (Lily) has been humping our new puppy here lately? Our new puppy (Kira - female also) is about 5 months old right now and is a giant schnauzer, so shes about the same size as our boxer.

Anyways, over the past 2 weeks we've caught our boxer humping her.. Kira hasn't been spayed yet, but what might be causing this? Is it something to be worried about? They play fine together.. they play fight some, but nothing aggressive; just growling and jumping. Any ideas??

I could be wrong, but to me this sounds like a dominance thing. I believe Lily is trying to establish that she's the boss and the dominant female.

Think its something I should be worried about? Kira is going to get quite a bit bigger than Lily, so I dont want any problems later..

Ms. Ali does this from time to time with Jordis (female boxer) that she plays with. It's definitely a dominance thing and it's never amounted to anything more than mounting with between the two. They go about playing again as if nothing happened. I'm sure if Kira doesn't want Lily doing this she'll let her know. Maybe someone else on boxer world will be able to give you some better advice. Good Luck.

Yes, probably. Having two females is almost always a bad idea. Once they are both mature, they may start to fight and with females it can be deadly. There have been lots of posts on here on on this very topic. If you are lucky, one will be more dominate than the other and the other will accept it. If you are not lucky, you may have to keep them separated all the time. Hopefully that won't be the case.

Good luck!

I happen to have two females. One Lily (great name by the way ;) the boxer and Bella the staffy. When Bella first came, she came in the house as if she owned it. She is a year older than Lily. Things were fine. Lily was only 1 then. Now Lily is 2 and quite the dominant one. It didn't take her long to establish she is Queen Bee. She now humps Bella all the time. Sometimes when bella is laying down, Lily will stand over her looking all debonair and stuff. If Bella even moves and inch, Lily goes right to humping her.......most times so hard that she humps herself right off her and into the side of the couch or table! I usually stop her. But Bella doesn't react much, maybe a chomp on Lily's back leg. Lily has even started to hump the 3 yr old male too. He's a big pushover and lets her for a moment then in one swail swoop ~ he's behind her taking back his control. She just stands there looking around like she's a school girl in her backpack. LOL

I know I will ALWAYS have to monitor them together. Playtimes, things can get a little outta hand and one of them gets a bit nasty to the other and that can escalate quickly. So far, one loud "HEY" outta me and they immediately stop and settle down.

Your Lily may just learn she's got her hands full once Kira towers over her. Kira may just like being the submissive one and Lily won't have to keep proving she's Queen Bee. But don't ever try to predict that nothing will ever happen when they are alone. We all know how girl's can just get Bi%$chy, and scraps can happen pretty quick when one is off their rocker that day. Just stay on your game, try to mediate when you think one is instigating and stop any play YOU feel is getting outta hand. They need to learn their boundries and most of all that "YOU ARE THE QUEEN BEE!" and rule the roost!

Good info! As of right now, Kira just kind of takes it and doesn't really act like the humping is bothering her... maybe it will stay that way. They can get pretty rough sometimes, but i've never seen them try to snap aggressively at each other, just kind of growling and jumping on each other so far. If it does get a little loud or they start sounding too into it then I can yell and they quit as if nothing happened. Its like they have their 'playtime' and then if there tired sometimes they will lay down and sleep beside each other like they're best friends. Kira even trys to go in Lilys crate sometimes with her... not sure what thats about either.

I guess we'll have to see how it turns out..

The aggression won't come until the youngest dog comes into adulthood (around age 2). Puppies play; adults fight. If they're going to end up fighting, there likely won't be any indication for at least another next year and a half. If you search the forum you'll find a lot of past threads on the topic of female-female aggression. Here are just a few:

I know it's not fun to think about the possibility of your two not getting along, but just beware of the potential problems and take steps to avoid them. I actually have two females as well, but mine are much farther apart in age, which helps a lot. When we got Caney as a pup, we always treated Creek first (with attention, treats, meals, etc.) to reinforce her position as "top dog" to the new puppy. It also helped that Caney turned out to be a more submissive personality than Creek.
