What is it that you don't like about males?

We have two female... and currently a female foster. However, we also have a strong male. This changes the pack dynamics.

I'm not sure it's that I don't like males...more the idea of one, simply because I've never had one. There's not really a rational reason for the bias, and as I've looked at tons of photos and posts over the past few days, I'm getting more and more sold on the idea. Heck...they're all lovable and adorable, right? And I'd just hate to take the chance at disrupting Barkley's world with another female....I just don't want to take the chance. Having never had a male dog, though, I'm curious to hear people's opinions and experiences with them (all of which, so far, seem to be quite positive).

I originally wanted a female, but we ended up with a male and I couldn't be happier with any other dog. He's sweet, cudly and one big baby. To be honest I think I would like our next addition to be a male too (we shall see). ;)

i have 2 female boxers now, and they are great. they play, sleep, and eat together. the only time they ever "fought" was when they both got one of those jumbo rawhide bones and the younger one decided she wanted both :) she got put in her place though and it has never happened since and their relationship has not changed :)

I have two females and one male; the two females have been in the most horrific fight ever. They are now kept seperated all the time, if they so much as get out together they start posturing and getting all puffed up. Having a male has made no difference what so ever.

IMO males are more easy going also!
;)
My neutered males don't lift their legs on people or indoors. They are not aggressive either.

I have two males and a female and will always have males.

So far, all my male fosters have been the same way. And most of my friends who have owned many boxers, agree - always will have a neutered male boxer in the house!kingicon

My concern with two females is that most of the stories where two females in a household are clashing - they originally got along and then something changed. I could never imagine my furkids hating each other.:(

I can't think of a better boxer pet than a male who is neutered young. They're little angels!

Can you stand one more opinion? I love female boxers, have had them from very young to very old, and am involved in boxer rescue, so sometimes I have multiple females and males to manage.

My experience is that EVERY female boxer deeply yearns to be the mistress of her "own" home. Harmony and Peace in ones home is a very good thing, don't you think?

Sometimes a submissive female will yield to a more dominant female, but age and years change things. Dogs who have lived together for years will one day decide the house is not big enough for both of them.

You may be able to "manage" the situation with good training and your vigilence, but why not choose harmony for all? I had two lovely girls as fosters once and there was always tension which erupted over tennis balls. I had to remove all balls for the duration of their stay! When the more dominant lady went to her new home, the personality of the newcomer lady blossomed! She was a totally different girl! She bacame the head of household and all dogs, male and female behaved differently. The tension had been significant.

BTW, sometimes two males do the same thing! LOL

Great Post - just in the nik of time also. I currently have two female boxers (ages 2 and 1). My girls get along great and I am yearning to add another boxer - I intend to get a male but am concerned that girls may start to fight over the male being in the house - should this be a concern??

My 2 year old female is very very very submissive - not a mean bone in her body. My other female tends to rule the roost - kinda bossy but very loving also - just has more of a stubborn temperment than the other.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Does anyone feel that I should just stop at the two that I have and count my blessings - would I be crazy to upset the apple cart at this point. I love them dearly and sooooo want another one - especially a little boy.

Any help - will be most appreciated.

Sincerely,

Gracie Ann and Madisons Momma

I wouldn't worry that a new male would upset the balance with your girls. If you have the time, go for it! Your dogs will most likely enjoy the male energy.

You now have a "pack". I used to try to give "equal" attention to all and make everything even and fair. The dogs don't operate that way! They operate by hierarchy. It is quite complex and they are more skilled at it than we humans are. Boxers play vigorously together, and that is how they establish their interactions.

Your two ladies are quite young, not really grown yet. Their relationship will evolve over time. Hopefully they work it out peacefully.

The only advice I can offer is to honor the order they establish, provide good leadership and training, and establish a calm evironment where contentiousness is not tolerated.

I think you could probably do a search on this topic and find lots of threads because I know I've jumped in on quite a few. My big concern is people having two young females that are very close in age. From what I've seen, this frequently doesn't work out.

Sometimes people want females because they think they are sweeter, more "maternal," more petite, etc. They might be a bit smaller than the boys so that one's not a fallacy, but in my experience the boys are often more easygoing and affectionate. Don't tell my Lucy I said that! What I do know is that if the girls start fighting, they will not stop.

I have a female Boxer and one of my current fosters is a female. She (the foster) is very sick (nothing contagious, though!). When I brought her into my home I held my Lucy's jowls in my hands and said, "Lucy, Star is very sick. Please don't give her the business, okay?" And much to my relief, Lucy's hackles didn't even go up and she let Star into our home with no problems. Usually, though, it can be a bit tense having a bunch of girlies around. You could not pay me to have two females in my home permanently. One Lucy Goose is plenty.
