We have two boxers are fawn female (Daysha) and a larger brindle male (Mojo) they have always ate together and shared bowls of food. the past couple weeks we have noticed that Daysha seems to be losing weight, and we've noticed that since Mojo was nuetered in October he seems to be eating more and more. Just to make sure Daysha is getting enough food we want to feed them seperately but don't know how to train this new habit. They have their bowls filled in the morning and they eat throughout the day with no intervention from us. Any suggestions?

The best thing to do is not to free feed them. It is impossible to tell who is eating what and you cannot train them to eat out of their own bowls if they are left out all day. With my two, they eat in the morning and the evening. I put both bowls down a few feet apart and since they know the food won't sit there all day, they both eat all the food in a matter of minutes. I can always tell if one of them isn't feeling well if they don't want to eat or don't eat all of the food I put down for them. I also make them sit and wait until I say its ok for them to eat. This is a great way to reinforce who is in charge. In my opinion, the best thing for them would be to eat scheduled feedings.

You shouldn't free feed! They will soon get used to eating twice a day out of their own bowls. Then it will be easy to control who eats how much. :)
