11:30 Friday night my boxer was itching his eye like crazy. By 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning I was rushing him to the doggy hospital. He had welts all over his body, his eyes were pretty much swollen shut, and his mouth was swollen. They gave him a shot of benedryl and sent him on his way. Sunday afternoon I was on my way back to the hospital. His eyes had cleared up and there weren't as many welts on his body, but now his ears are swollen. They gave him more benadryl and said that he is having an allergic reaction. My poor baby looks so sad. He's gotten better today, but I'm still worried. Has anyone ever had this problem?

When Oscar was a pup he got bit by something and his whole face swelled up. His eyes were almost shut and his jowls were twice as big as normal. He didn't have the bumps on his body though. He was given some sort of steroid shot and the swelling was down a few hours later. We now keep benedryl on hand in case it ever happens again.
It hasn't happened since so I don't know what he got into.

Hannah is just getting over being stung by something. Her poor little face was so swollen and the hives just kept coming back. The benadryl shot they gave her did not last that long so our vet gave her a low dose steroid shot. Is that a possibility for your dog? It would really help with the swelling and hives. Good luck!

My Bailey had the same thing about 5 months ago. She obviously was bitten by something and her face was swollen to 3 times its normal size and her eyes were swollen shut and it looked like she had marbles underneath her skin on her back. I rushed her to the Vet and he gave her a shot and it all went away within a few hours but he gave me Prednisone to keep on hand in case this happed again then I could give her 2 pills to stop the reaction. It hasn't happened since then thank goodness but it was very worrisome.

Just last night

Jazz must have gotten stung by something. She was outside and the mosquitoes were biting but after coming in the house she rubbed her face on the crate and sent it into the wall, when I looked at her face it was HUGE. Her face was so swollen she had no eyes. She looked like a cross between a sharpei and pit bull. Went flying to the vet and he gave her 3 shots, 1 lasix, 1 anti-inflamatory and an antibiotic since her nose looked like it was starting to split due to the swelling. He thought she was bitten by a snake but she never left our front porch. I gave her another shot of anti-inflammatory at 4:00 AM and more benedryl and lasix. I've never seen anything quite like this, scared the be-jesus out of me!!! Good thing there were no cops on the way to the vet or I'd be in jail waiting on bail. anyway she appears to be getting better slowly. The vet said the benedryl only works if given right away? That the lasix is better. Any thoughts on that? She really didn't have any hives except from the mosquitoe bites. Maybe a spider? How long before your dogs got back to normal? Dr. Johnson thought maybe tonight she'd be close to normal. She acts good now. If my kids looked that bad I'm sure they'd take them from me. thought I was going to lose her. I'm glad I'd read this post yesterday. Any updates would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steph, Jazz & Thumper

Our Sam was outside just now running around the back yard like always and when he came inside my husband noticed something was weird with his eye. When we looked at him, his right eye is almost swollen shut and his left eye is starting to swell now. Of course this happens after the vet is closed, so we call the emergency hospital and they told us it would be at least a 2 hour wait. They asked if it looked like he had been bitten by a snake, which it doesn't as far as we can tell, so they told us to give him 2 adult benedryl and see if it is better in 1-1 1/2 hours.

He doesn't seem to be hurting at all, besides trying to rub his eyes with his paws. So, we gave him the benedryl and are waiting. It's just so scary to have this happen so quickly.

Well Tyson is much better today! When I went to the vet, they gave him a shot of benadryl. It worked somewhat. I gave him bendaryl every 4-6 hours and it made some of the swelling go away. He loves to play w/ insects so I am assuming he got bit or stung by something. Thank you for all of your input though. He really scared me this time!

I'm glad he is doing better. :) It is scary when their faces swell up!

In case the vet did not tell you, the hives could stay around for awhile or go away and then reappear. Hannah is still getting them on her ears since whatever bit her is not through with her yet. Benadryl is helping great though.
