Eye boogers

I think boxers in general seem to get more gunk from their eyes (what my boys called "eye boogers") than other canines. But...Buster's have been bad lately, especially one eye. In the morning, it's kind of crusty and his eye always seems to be running. His nose sometimes looks as though it's running too. This is just past 3 days or so. Does this indicate something is wrong or does he have a "cold", allergies or is this just normal.

Buster managed to knock of this gold glittery start we had on Christmas tree several days ago. I wonder if some of the glitter ended up in his eye? Could that be a possibility? I know I was finding glitter in his water bowl for at least two days even though I change his water a couple times a day.

Boogers Boogers Boogers...

Maddie is a Booger factory, they are flung on walls, but generally she enjoys rubbing her face into the couch.

I think it is normal and nothing to worry about. I have heard of comments that changing your pups diet can help, but I have found that it only helps to a degree.

The only concern that I would have is with respect to your comment that it is noticeable more so in one eye, than the other. You may try giving it a good look in the morning before your baby has managed to rub them off somewhere first.

Good Luck,

Licks from Maddie and eye Boogers too.

Eye Gunk

My Maggy will occassionally have eye discharge and I'll take a warm washcloth and wash her eyes out very gently. Also, there was one time it was yellowish and rather thick so I knew that this was most likely an infection so I ended up taking her to the vet and she was prescribed antibiotic ointment to put in her eyes. Usually her eye gunk is clear. Good luck to you!

If one eye is way worse than the other, I would be concerned. You really don't want to play around with your dogs eyes. You could try flushing out the eye, but if there is no improvement, I would get it checked out by your vet.

Good luck!

I usually don't worry about it when Baxter's eye boogers are white, but when they're green/ or yellow, I put Neosporin or any generic brand of the triple antibiotic ointment in his eye- I just hold it open and swipe it in there, and rub it around with his eye closed, gently. It doesn't have to be an ointment specifically for the eye- I asked the vet, and any one of the Neosporin type ointments will do. It's the same thing they would prescribe to you, just cheaper! It goes back to normal within a couple days, sometimes faster than that.

Would I flush out his eye like you would a child? Not sure I could get him to hold still for me. And...you really just put neosporin in the eye? I wouldn't think that was safe. I usually wipe Buster's eyes continually. The right eye is definitely the one with more noticable discharge. Morning time it's kind of crusty. Maybe a call to the vet will help.

Eye boogers and discharge are never normal. No more "normal" for the dog than it would be if that junk was coming out your own eyes daily. Whether or not it can be corrected can be another story (causes vary from low quality diet, allergies, and irritants to blocked or malformed tear ducts, dischitaisis, enropion, and conjunctivitis).

Box Boys: If one eye is discharging more than the other, a foreign object, blockage or conjunctivitis are the most likely problems. All of which require medical treatment. Eyes aren't something to mess about with, so better to see a doctor sooner rather than too late.

"Eye Boogers"

My vet has always told me (with all of my animals) that the eyes clean themselves and when your eyes are closed (such as when you are sleeping), that everything the eye is cleaning out is pushed to the inner corner of the eyelid. Humans get this too which is why in the mornings many of us clean out gunk in the same area we clean it out of our dog's eyes. So normally I would say it is just the body's natural reaction to dirt or something in the eye...however, when one eye is worse than another or the volume, color or consistency have changed then it is time to see your vet.
