Extreme Eye Mucus?

My 13 week old Brindle has a LOT of eye mucus all the time. I asked his vet about it and he said it was normal, but I don't think he really understood how bad it is. It's to the point to where I need a wet cloth to soak it off his eyes at least once a day, and I wipe his face at least 7 or 8 times a day. The clumps just get so big. Should I worry and keep at his vet at our next visit?

I don't mind cleaning him off because he's my baby and I love him, but I know it irritates him. It's yellow and I know with humans that's bad.

Any ideas???

Sounds extreme!

I have to wash Bubbie's face in the morning and maybe once through the day, but it is nothing like what you describe. I would take him to the vet for sure and not leave without an antibiotic ointment. It may not be an infection, but I would have to know for certain. Good luck!

Sometimes a change of food can make a big difference in the amount of eye mucus. What do you feed?

his food

He's been eating Purina One Puppy Chow, but I just glanced at a post saying that that's bad for him. I'm going to read on to see the specifics and why it's bad. His nose has been pretty stuffy for the past 2 days.

I'm afraid that is pretty poor quality food. There is lots of better food out there and it's not necessarily much more expensive as you often feed less of it. There is also the potential of spending much less at the vet in the future when you have a healthier dog.

Good luck!

Thanks for the post. I was just reading the BW link "choosing a good dry food . . " and saw that corn is NOT something you want in the ingredients and that's the first ingredient listed. Do you have any suggestions on a good dry food?

Check out this: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/

Personally I feed a raw natural diet, so I'm not an expert on kibble. Some popular choices are Canidae, Merrick, Innova and Timberwolf organics. There are many many other good foods. There is no food that is best on it's own. You should actually rotate between foods. You want to choose foods with different meat sources and from different manufacturers to get a well rounded diet.

Good luck!
