expecting puppies!!!!!

Hi all, We are expecting puppies any minute ( I hope) Maddie is due TODAY but she has been so miserable the last week and 1/2. We really thought she'd go early being as she has had 1 other liter before with her last owner. They didn't take care of her and they never saw her puppies. They said they were eaten by coyotes! They weren't even around when she had them. So they didn't really know if maybe she ate them. How common is it for a mother to eat her own? I know sometimes if they are dead but what about alive? She is sooo sweet though. The only one she grows at is Harley (my male who is the dad!) We say that she's telling him, "Look what you did to me!!!" LOL Any how, we are all soo excited and scared for her and the puppies at the same time. We've read alot and learned alot of info. but I'm sure we can always use more. How long is it normal to go over their due date if she happens to do so? Does anyone have any advice? Thanks

Um, you really bred a female who may have eaten her last litter of puppies?

That's the least of it but saying anything furhter won't get me anywhere. I have never bred any myself to give you advice on birthing but I wish the mother and the puppies good luck and hope you have her spayed after this litter for her sake. Good luck on the puppies. PLease do furhter research into breeding and the proper ways to go about it for future reference. You can do a search on this with the search option and contact recommended/responsible breeders and people who show who can advise you on proper breeding practices for the benefit of the breed. Inappropriate breeding practices are frowned on on this board so be prepared for some possible negative responses. I have tried not to be negative in my own.

If you do not already have a mentor (reputable breeder) to assist you with the whelping process, you may want to find someone soon. I know NOTHING about whelping, but there can be complications and there's a lot to know. I would suggest finding someone and doing a lot of reading ASAP.

I hope things go well. After she gives birth, I hope you wil have this girl spayed, not just so she doesn't get pregnant again, but also b/c it's better for her long-term health.

Breeding is a touchy subject (obviously) but for good reason -on BW. I think you should contact your vet asap. Have your bitch checked over & see what the vet has to say. Let us know how things go!

OH man...call your vet and pray that things go smoothly (that's all you can do at this point), then be responsible and SPAY your girl and neuter Harley. I just read a post and you were asking what a reverse brindle was---and you're breeding BOXERS??? OMG :eek:

sweetkneez23 If this is the dogs second litter, how old is she? I sure hope that she is at least 3 years old. I have seen people breed their puppies the first heat and try to get a litter out of them every heat after. This is just ridiculous, someone that does this to their dog, something they are susposed to love dearly, really doesn't know what love is. Please take advice from everyone else and have your poor baby spayed and the male neutered after this litter, I wouldn't want to get pregnant everytime I had a period and having babies popping out of me every nine months. :(

Well, I have to tell you people, I am very disappointed on how you so called "give advice" on this board. I am going to update you and address these negative comments/bashing (if you will). I am new to this board and new to "having puppies" I won't say breeding because we are not trying to breed our dogs for the heck of it! Aren't ever planning to again. I don't own the female (Maddie) it's my sister-in-laws dog and it was her and her husbands decision and we are keeping a puppy because we love our boxer soo much and wanted another. Maddie is over 3 years old closer to 4. This is the first time we've ever studded Harley and don't guess we will ever again but I'm not running right out and having him neutered just because you say so. He doesn't live with maddie or any other female dogs. Harley is a beautiful dog and if a breeder asks us to stud him out then we may because he has great features. As for the puppy we keep it will be a female and fixed as soon as she's old enough. We don't want to "breed". Also, we have researched tons but I thought I'd just ask on the board for any extra advice since I thought this is what it was there for. It sounds to me like that this forum was just invented for newbies to be trapped into a bash fest. You don't know the whole story. You don't know how prepared we are. I was going to post the pics. of the whelping room and bed that was built and you would have seen all the care and love that went into taking care of this sweet girl. No! She will never breed again and we weren't planning to breed her again before I posted. If you people had seen where my sister-in-law and I saved this dog from and what she looked like when we took her out of there and how wonderfully she's cared for now you would be appologizing up and down! As for her first litter, we don't know that she ate her puppies. someone just suggested it to us that it is possible since it does happen from time to time and the previous owners never saw one puppy. I'm telling you that we are not doing this half-way. I stayed at my sister-in-laws house last night and we stayed up all night with Maddie making her comfortable and tending to her every need. I don't feel I have learned anything from posting to you nor do I feel good about it. I'm just upset now over the way I was treated.
no, she hasn't had her puppies yet. Maybe I'm just tired from being up all night but personally I don't think most of you would have ever said anything to me if It was to my face and you saw our situation personally. In fact. I know you wouldn't have.

i think you have yet to learn that breeding is a very touchy subject on this website. why? because there are a million boxers out there in shelters or on the streets in need of a loving home, while others are breeding (such as you, even though it is only one time, it is still producing new puppies) purely for satisfaction. from what i have learned on this site, breeding because someone tells you your dog has great features is not a commendable act whatsoever.

i reccommend that you do a search on breeding and see what people on this site have to say about it.

this site IS here for people to learn and help others get through situations, but it is also here to let you know that breeding should not be done just because a dog has good features. Asia has good features and we have been approached about if we are going to breed her but she was fixed as soon as we could schedule an appointment.

- I hate to break the bad news to you but if she came from a bad situation before and was in a not so good condition, she probably shouldn't have been bred in the first place.

the people that are replying to your posts are not out to get you in any way, they are out to better the Boxer breed, not to praise careless breeding practices. i am not saying that you are careless in breeding your female now because you're right, i don't know your situation, but from what i understand of your situation, she should not be having puppies. i would recommend that you have her and your male spayed and neutered, not because everyone on this website has said so, but for the well being of your dogs. many complications can arise due to not being spayed/neutered that i'm not sure you are aware of.

no one is trying to cut you down, but i do believe the dog should not be having puppies right now under her past circumstances. this website IS here to help people to learn and ask questions about what should and shouldn't be done when it comes to breeding, feeding, naming...etc... and that is exactly what they are trying to educate you on. don't take offense to it.

There are so many people who come to this board for advice and get angered when they get advice they were not expecting or wanting to hear :mad: .

Why are you trying to breed your dogs then? To get a puppy for yourself? What about the rest of the litter? Where will they go? Will they be spayed/neutered? Will you take each and every puppy back if their new homes can no longer take care of them?

You don't have to neuter because anyone on this board says so...they offered you this advice because not only does neutering and spaying help prevent pet overpopulation, but it can also prevent testicular (and other forms of cancer).

Harley is a beautiful dog and if a breeder asks us to stud him out then we may because he has great features.

And I suppose you had him evaluated by a professional judge and/or responsible breeder to assess his "great features"?, how about heath testing for genetically inherited diseases with are very common to the breed?

No it was invented for those who love and care for the boxer breed, people here get very passionate when topics such as breeding are discussed here. The advice that is offered is not meant to hurt anyone, it's meant to help boxer owners learn how to be responsible over their pets.

YOU ARE BREEDING BOXERS. Having even one litter makes you a breeder, and by breeding un-tested, un-evaluated dogs that makes you a backyard breeder. There is a boxer standard (which good breeders adhere to closely) which discusses boxer colors, obviously your not familiar with it.

Well now is the time to find someone who is knowledgeable and ask them for help with the whelping. You can get answers from over the internet about your questions, but that won't help you when your in an emergency situation, you need to find someone who knows the ropes.
Also, you should now be trying to find the babies homes (yes even before they are born). Interview the people, make sure you draw up a spay/neuter contract for the puppy buyers.
