Eukanuba boxer?

I was browsing through the pet store because I was looking for a cheaper costing healthy dog food. I ended up getting TOTW, which was $15 cheaper and 4 lbs more food than the Wellness Core I was using.

I came across Eukanuba Boxer. Is it any good? Or is it like that Royal Canin Boxer stuff - which is not so good.

IMO it is substantially worse than Royal Canin's "boxer formula" (which itself hardly rates as a good quality food).

Eukanuba of any variety is one of the worst foods on the market...despite it's large price tag.

That's what I assumed but I didn't find it on the analysis website. I figured it was to new to have been looked at by them yet.

When I talked to my vet about Harley not gaining anymore weight, she said, make sure to use a good food like Science diet, Eukanuba or something else I can't remember. So I looked the 3 up and they are all crap. Do vets have stock in these foods? Why else would they try to promote that stuff.

I could see maybe if she said 3 mid price foods, being the above, and 3 high price foods, just in case I couldn't afford the better stuff. I was just shocked when I saw the ratings of the foods she suggested.

Because typically it isn't something that they are educated on. Their education comes from the companies that manufacture those foods. And yes most of them sell the RX diets (and some of the regular diets as well) in their offices.

You know I am really glad that someone brought up this questions.

I have a 9 year old rescue who I have had in my care now for 3 or so years. When he came to me he was weighing in around 40 or so lbs. He came wtih a bag of kibble and bits and I knew right away this food had to go. So I put him on the same kibble that my first dog was on "Royal Canin #26 Boxer". Jakin did well on it and I noticed the weight starting to come back to Malcolm. His coat began to grow back and it was so soft. Alright, so Mal loved this kibble so much that we have just kept him on it. Even though he needed to be switched to a seniors food since he isn't as physical as my puppy is. Well RC has jumped so far in price that we can no longer afford to feed it. So a vet at PetsMart suggested the Eukanuba Boxer. I looked it up on DFA and it wasn't a recommended kibble. My father at this point had already picked up a bag. Malcolm is eating it though he would much rather have RC.

Which high quality kibble would be good for a senior?

IMO a senior food isn't necessary. You simply feed based on weight and age of an all life stages food or regular food. if he starts gaining too much weight, cut back on the amount fed. The senior foods are typically marketed with Glucosamine, etc which there isn't enough in there to make a difference, so I wouldn't stress yourself out to find something and pay the higher price associated with it, when 99% of the time it's a marketing gimmick. Just find a good quality food (which isn't Eukanuba or Royal Canin) and feed based on his weight and age and adjust the feeding amount to how he looks.

Sounds like a plan. Since I still have some of the small bag left I will start the transition process to an all life stages food now.

Currently my 13mo old, Solomon, is eating Merrick. He has done well on it since he was 5 months old. So I will see how Mal takes to it and go from there.
