As much as i love our boxer ruby, she is the absolute dog hudini of this world!!
We got her at 18 months as an ex - show dog. Bought her home, after a few weeks BOOM shes gone!
we've made runs , she digs out, we've simply let her off she clears the 6 foot fence, She is now 9 and she is still getting out. We extend the fence and she digs. We are only renting now so she ahs to be sadly tied up. this is NO HOME for a boxer, but we cant do anything about it! this is obviously why she was sold and we never got told! she is the most beautiful dog but she puts people off because whenever people come over we always end up chasing the dog down the road. We've tried toys to keep her in and ammused, doesn't work, she is getting old and arthritic but she will struggle down the stairs and you dont look for 10 minutes and she'll be GONE over the fence. She fools people shes a total bluff! her safety is what concerns us the most when she gets out. And more worse our golden is let off all the time when ruby's tied up and she doesnt go anyhwere but when ruby jumps the fence so does the golden and we have to chase 2 dogs. If the boxer stayed the golden would stay. The golden see's her as her mother because we got the golden when she was a pup and ruby was about 6 so the golden see's her as her mother and does whatever she does. any help PLEASE . i will take it!! we just cant stop her getting out and its driving our family crazy!!
dad came to a point of wanting to get rid of her (many times) but her sucking up ways(TOTAL BOXER) sooths him and he would never get rid of her. PLus we're the only ones that know how to catch her!!

I'm curious as to why she is not kept indoors when nobody is home to supervise her?

Boxers can be extremely inquisitive and do quite a bit of damage out of boredom

For her safety, I would really suggest keeping her indoors when nobody is home, perhaps crate training them both.

I'm in the process of convincing dad into letting them inside. I'm doing whatever i can. I cried, i wrote sucking up letters to him, but he and mum said they don't want the dogs inside they are dogs not humans. I really want to keep them inside. They do have a very warm kennel thats well away from the weather, but i really want to have them inside so i can be with them all the time. I've never seen anybody with a crate. What are they? Like a baby playpen? Thanks for the info! If you have any ideas on how to convince dad into letting them inside, please tell me!

Crates

crates are basicly boxes that are made for dogs. they come in various sizes, so you will need to messure your dog to get the right one. they can be found in pet stores and some department stores. also you will have to get info on crate training, it can take time with older dogs, but can be done. Most dogs take to the crate pretty easily. maybe dad will let you keep them aleast in the garage or some part of the house while youre gone, and at night. Also you can trian the dogs thier borders of the yard, this too can be very long time training for a dog that will run away, but is possible. My male boxer will run away so I'm working on the same problems as you. Be consistant with your training nothing will happen over nite, but can be rewarding in the end. oh boy

I'm glad to hear my Siren is not he only houdini boxer. We found her on the other side of the new 6 foot chain link my husband had to put up along the back fence, the rest of the fencing is 6 foot vertical wood slats that she is CHEWING one by one, though she hasn't used that way to get out yet. She did the 6 foot jump just yesterday and my husband is so fed up he told me to find her a home or he's going to take her out into the woods and you know what....let's just say we're fighting now because I told him over my dead body.

So now she can't be outside unless she's on a chain - which I hate doing to her. She has a great yard to run around in - a fancy dog house with baseboard heat, windows, etc... but there was a squirrel on the other side of the fence...and she stayed right there and watched the squirrel. We have a court date this next week fighting a ticket from when she got out the last time - if she gets caught out again - the ticket will be a misdemeanor and create for me a criminal record.

I hate leaving and coming home and worrying about whether or not she'll still be here. She has toys, she has a companion, she gets walked every day before I go to work. I'm at a loss. I can't use one of those underground fence correction systems because the problem area is at the back of the yard and to run it back there would cut the yard in half for her. What's the point of that? I'm considering barbed wire because she's smart enough that one time of trying to jump and hitting that stuff will cure her of her determination to jump. However, I don't want to hurt her. And what if I'm not home when she does it and she get caught or something?

This summer I am considering (if she lasts that long) putting rose bushes or something prickly up against the chainlink so she won't even get close enough...but I don't know what else to do. I love her to bits...and I know he does too - I don't want to give her away because I can't guarantee that anyone will love her like we do - or take good care as good care of her. I know I could walk her a couple of times a day to wear her out - but I have a full-time job AND I'm a full-time college student. I devote a lot of time to my dogs - but I'm just wondering if it's ever going to be enough. She's only 1 year old so I'm hoping she'll outgrow this, but I don't know that dogs outgrow a bad behavior without correction.

woah! our dogs are exactly the same! i hope your's grows out of it because beleive me you'll have a hell of a time trying to keep it in the yard! we've probably paid around $1000-$2000 if not more in pound bills to get her back, and also fuel chasing around to get her. We thought the electric fence would stop her( it wasn't a full bolt one) but she finds a way to miss it and get over. She nearlly got out again today i was out there with her and sat down and i though she just went to do a wee and when the golden got up and starting barking i new she was trying to get out and sure enough!
I know, i would never get rid of her because i know that if someone bought her off us and realised the problem of her they'd sell her and the chain would keep going, and i couldn't do that to her. The garage is a great idea but she poo's and wee's all over it , we've tried it. I think the only option for us is to keep her inside and toilet train her, but again thats convincing dad. Thanks for the crate info! I'm really running out of idea's! I'm starting to do some obedience with her. Even though shes a retired show dog, but she doesn't know any of that anymore so it's ammusing her to train.

I realize you are a newer member here, but I would suggest you go back and re-read the rules. The discussion of devices or practices that cause electricity to run through a dog, are not allowed to be discussed. This would include shock collars and electronic fencing.

That being said, I am not sure how you can solve this problem by leaving your dogs outside all of the time, without supervision. Chaining the dog up, is not offering much of a life for her either. I hope you can convine your father to allow her to be indoors, where she should be

crates

Jst wanted you to know that a dog expecially a boxer will not wee or poo where it sleeps. how ever thy do need sufficiant breaks from the crate, for potty and play.While I have to use a runner for Lt. some have to use a long chain. but this should be for short periods no longer than a couple of hours at a time. you can also work with her on the runner, teaching her name and recall, plus much more.She also has to see you as the alfa of your group. Make her sit before you feed her, and when you walk her, make sure she is not in frontof you. She needs to understand that you are in control, not her. reward her for doing good, ignore her for a short time for doing bad. These are basic techniques for stuborn dogs, and in no way will hurt them. Training must be done daily, no matter what. also have plenty patience. Try sharing crate training info with dad, and see if he will meet you half way. this will allow you to show him you are serrious, and alot better than a childish stunt like moving in with ruby.
