Escaping through front door

I am having real trouble with Bridget. She has learnt to open the front door and rush out through the front yard to the street, running full pelt. She is virtually impossible to catch, she manages to duck and weave and run so fast. She snoops through all the gardens in the street and sniffs and runs across the road. We are fortunate that we live in a cul de sac, but still cars come in and I am frightened she will get hit because she travels at such a pace from garden to garden. It is a real game for her. I have tried punishing her for it when finally I catch her, which then makes it hard to catch her the next time. I have tried rewarding her which tells her it is ok to do it. We are all very disciplined about locking the door, but she can still manage to catch us out. It is her that needs the discipline not to go out that door, but I don't know how to train her now she knows how to open the door. She is very naughty with any recall, that has always been a problem with her during training. I don't know how to improve on that fault. If anyone has a suggestion, I would really appreciate it. :confused:

Click the link he explained a way to try and keep them from tearing up the screens, I think this might work for your baby to stop opening/bolting out the front door.....

You can stop her if you see her do it, but obviously the best thing would be to actually lock the door when she's in the house. Or you could put a security chain on, so that even if she opens it it will only open an inch or two. Unfortunately both of these things rely on you and other members of your family remembering to do them!

Alternatively what about changing the locks/handles on the door so that she can't open it.

For instance, my sister has a cat who can open internal doors by jumping up and hanging on the handles. So she turned all of the handles round so that to open the door you push it up instead of down. Of course, she could've just changed them for knobs!!!

Thanks for your ideas, that forum site has some good clues. I will try that method, I guess all training is time and I need to take more time I think. She generally does it when we are all busy doing something else. Thanks heaps for your support. We have sold this house and in a couple of months we are moving to a new home, so long as she is safe until then hopefully the new home will be easier to manage her in.

Escaping .

Our 6 mnth old pup also opens doors and flys off.We've turned the door handles with the handle facing upwards, and we've also put another handle lock at the top of the door. She now gets frustrated and trys to bite through the handle but is trying less and less to get out as it doesn't work anymore. Why are boxers so loving but too intelligent for their own good?
