We have been looking for something for ou lil' guy to chew on because he ist still teething pretty bad and i was looking for something 100% NATURAL. Anyways, I was in the all natural pet food store (Pet Club) and they were selling these pieces of elk antler. The guy said that the dogs would not be able to get through the antler and just try and eat out the marrow. But our lil' Sly at 9 months, is starting to chew off the ends and is actually breaking of the ends of the antler (not big pieces, just little tiny pieces). he seems to love it and he literally will be working on this antler for hours without putting a dent into it.

Being that the guy stated that Sly wouldnt be able to chew through it, and he is....should i take it away? Does anyone have any good ideas for complete natural chew treats for a 9 month old teeting puppy :) Thanks in advance.

I think the guy was simply misinformed. The antlers ARE edible and as long as he is not breaking off huge chunks they are perfectly fine and safe for him to eat. They don't last forever, they eventually do eat them over time so I wouldn't be concerned.

Bully sticks (cheapest online) and antlers (either deer or elk, but also cheapest online), as well as raw meaty bones are the best all natural chews IMO.

I have been getting antlers for my dogs for almost 2 years now. They chew them down. To be honest I have had some last a month and others 6 months. I have had both deer and elk. I know my dogs love them!

We have an 8 month old and he chews a lot of the rubber toys completely up. As a matter of fact we woke up lastnight to him puking up part of a rubber toy. The man who gave our dog obedience lessons recommend getting Nylabones (I think the spelling is right.) He said that they can chew on them and won't ever chew through. I'm not sure how they work because we haven't bought one yet. He just had his lesson on Monday. Good luck

nylabones are great when they are new, but as they get chewed, they will splinter and break off into pieces. They also last a long time, but have to be inspected regularily.

I'd stick with the antlers. When they get too small I throw them away.

My 6 month old puppy destroys every toy in just a few minutes except antlers.

I highly recommend them.

Make sure you get a big enough antler for your pup. I got size medium at Petco, which is fairly thick. I'm not worried about Brodie chewing small pieces off, b/c there aren't any small pieces on it.
