I heard that they decrease bloat too, because when the dog eats in high bowls, he absorb less air while eating.

I've heard they decrease bloat also. They don't have to stretch their necks down so far to eat. All three of mine eat and drink from elevated bowls.

The actual Purdue information is here:
http://vet.purdue.edu/epi/bloat.htm
The information on elevated feeders is in the March 2000 Update. What Purdue found was that feeding from elevated bowls presented a 110% increased the risk of bloat.

This was written before the Purdue information was published.

This article references the study and states that it shows an increase in bloat in dogs fed from raised bowls - although they credit it to Cornell University and not Purdue

The subject has come up on the forums in the past, and has gotten heated occasionally, for some strange reason.

And for the record - no, I don't feed from raised bowls, but my dogs often lay down to eat anyway (they're fed raw foods).

Nope!
I'd be more concerned about gulping food, rather than whether or not it's a few inches off of the ground. I offer Lara food throughout the day so she won't gulp it down too hungrily.

We don't use them either....Mostly because of the Purdue study and partly because I've always thought they didn't look too comfortable to eat from.:)

I use elevated bowls, and have used them since Xena was 6mths old. Never had a problem.:) I find Xena "gulps" her food when fed from the floor, and with elevated dishes, she eats slower, (almost!) like a lady!!:)

I use elevated bowls with Tyson. He has had them since he was a puppy. He eats very very slow so I don't worry about bloat too much. Now, Harley, our rotti on the other hand scarfs his food down so I may stop feeding him on the elevated feeder.
