So Fenric is starting to chew on anything he sees, and I'm sure the worst is yet to come. I've done a fairly competent job of removing things I don't want chewed.

The problem is that there is no easy way I can think of to remove the many electrical cord around the house. I have found one cord (to a lamp) VERY chewed and caught him beginning to chew on another. Fortunately neither cord had electricity flowing at the time, but sooner or later that streak of luck will die.

So, any tips on how keep Fenric from shocking himself to death?

If you keep him confined to just a couple of rooms you will find it makes toilet training a lot easier as well as being able to help stop any accidents happening with the electrical cords. I remember hiding cords and even tacking a couple out of the way when mine were tiny

dorian use to chew on things a lot too, the coffee table, furniture and wires. So I picked up a Bitter Apple spray at the local pet smart and put it on anything he liked to nibble. It stopped soon after.

I agree with the suggestion to keep him isolated if you can. You aren't as creative as Fenrick is when it comes to finding things to get into. I learned this lesson the hard way.

If you confine him to a single room, you have a better chance of thinking of everything.

I'd very seriously consider a crate. It's the safest place for michevious little puppies.

This stage will pass, but it might take some time.

Room restriction.

I took one room and made it completly safe. Tucked the wires under the carpet, taped them down if need be. She stayed in there if I couldn't supervise. She could go into other rooms if I could watch her closely. Now she seems to know that wires aren't for chewing so I don't have to watch her as closely.

Another thing, maybe he needs more chew toys?

uh just a quick comment: If the wires are plugged into the wall the current is still flowing through the wires, even with the lamp turned off. think of the wires like a garden hose with a sprayer at the end. There is water in the line regardless if the nozzle is depressed. The only way to ensure that there is no current in the wire is to shut the plug off at the breaker box. FYI

ladyluck, the cords were NOT plugged into the wall at the time, thankfully!

Pup does have a crate, and will go in it of his own accord. He is not allowed in any bedrooms unless we are there (bought hydraulic door closers, even!), but we can't figure out a way to isolate him in a single room. Our floor plan is VERY open. We have literally spent hours trying to figure out ways to confine him without resorting to the crate 24/7. The hallways are all too wide for doggy gates, and the kitchen is basically just 2 1/2 walls opening into the game room.

He very happily licked some of the first bitter spray stuff we bought off of beren's fingers (and the footstool), so we're not putting any trust in that just yet :rolleyes:.

He has chew toys galore, but isn't always interested in them unless a human is on the other end. I guess we'll keep experimenting with the bitter stuff, and keep trying to somehow mutilate our house into a hazard free zone.

I've been through this with a past dog of mine and believe me when I tell you stop the behavior quick! Whatever way you can! Remove lamps, tuck the cords under, they have child proof containers you can fold the cords up into to minimize the lenghth of them. My reasons behind telling you this? We realized our pup had eated the plugs off of lamps, our vacuum, every componant of our stereo system, Computer wires, phone cords, video game controllers, I could go on and on... Several hundred dollars later after we replaced everything we left her with a friend while we went out of town. He put her in the garage when he had to go out for a while one day, I guess she didn't like it and chewed the control pannel that contained the electrical system for his home to bits! :eek: It only gets worse and worse so be careful, the elecric shock never bothered her she just kept on chewing cords if she could get to them for her whole life!
