I have noticed that my 8 month old female hasn't been drinking out of her water bowl. she will drink if I scoop it in my hand. she also goes crazy for ice cubes that drop from the freezer door when we get crushed ice. is this normal?
I have a bowl with a blue surface, I thought they like that. I have tried a regular bowl and I have also put ice in the water but to no avail...any suggestions?

Sprokit did this with his food when he was a young pup...Don't remember how old?? Never with water though..The vet said that he decided he liked to be "hand" fed rather than eating out of the bowl....So needless to say, I stopped scooping his food for him and he went back to the bowl....Sorry not much help...

Baron (6 months) LOVES ice! He hears the ice machine in our fridge and he comes running from wherever he is! So I don't think that is anything to be concerned about.

If she is really not drinking any water all day long you should try a visit to the vet - at least to rule out any health issues and make sure she is not dehydrated.

Good luck, Wendy

Maybe try putting ice in his water bowl, so that he'll have to drink the water while trying to get the ice out...

Maybe she's just not thirsty, or only takes a few mouthfuls when you're not around.

You could try a different bowl (in addition to the other one you already tried), give her current bowl a good scrubbing or run through the dishwasher to remove any potentially odd odors, or try bottled or filtered water in her bowl. Sometimes tap water can have a slight chemical odor (ours will occasionally have a slight chlorine smell) - maybe that's throwing her off.

So long as she seems fine otherwise and isn't obviously overheated when turning her nose up at water, then I wouldn't worry. Just make sure she always has access to fresh, clean water and she'll drink if she needs to. :)

P.S. Buster is a huge ice cube fan also - whenever he hears the ice dispenser he'll come running into the kitchen and slam himself into a perfect sit with one paw up to beg for an icy treat. :p

Kona LOVES ice cubes, too. She just here's the freezer open, and she comes running. I have found that she soesn't like to frink from her water bowl unless I put in ice cold water from the fridge. We have a Brita filter pitcher, and she will only drink the water is from that. If I put ice cubes in it, she won't even try to get them. Maybe try giving her ice cold water from the fridge. Good luck.

Is the water bowl plastic or ceramic? Sometimes plastic will pick up odors like Bustermom said. Also, I would check out how much she is voiding. If she seems to be voiding fairly often then she is probably okay. Also, check out the color of her pee. Is it really yellow or normal looking? Some dogs just drink less than others and it may be normal for her. My Kianna drinks about half of what my Giguere drinks. He's a water hog.
