Our 8-month Boxer will eat from her food bowl, but walk away to chew her food. She does this the entire time she eats and my fiance and I noticed that she appears to be somewhat afraid of her bowl. We have tried changing her bowls, but the same thing still occurred. She does not have a problem with her water bowl and it is the same as her original food bowl. We feel horrible b/c we don't know why she could possibly be afraid of her food bowl. What could be causing this?

I don't know but sampson our 6 month old does the same thing. it is so cute what he does he will take out all his dinner and when there is some yougut or pumpkin in the bowl his little leggs shack as he tries to get closer. I try to hold the bowl for him and it seems to help.

I don't know if it's the same thing...but we had a lab who did this. But he only wanted to eat with us. So he would grab a mouthful, bring it into the living room or dining room and eat it there.

Or are you standing there when he does it? Does he seem to hide from the bowl? Is it stainless? Perhaps he's afraid of the "other dog". Not sure...

Razz does that all the time when she eats. She grabs a mouthful of food and walks around chewing and making sure we haven't left. She'll come over to get petted while still chewing and then run and grab another mouthful. She just likes to keep moving.

one of my boxers did the exact very thing. turned out he just liked to know where we were and would follow us around to see if we were still there. as long as your dog is eating his food and is healthy, i wouldn't worry too much about it. it might just be a temporary puppy phase.

Thanks for all the ideas about why she might be doing this. The more replies I read, the more I realized that the reason why she is doing this is probably because she wants to keep an eye on us and make sure we are still "hanging out" with her. Thanks again for everyone's help!

My Sandy has always done this. She wants to be with us when she is eating.
It is funny, even if she has already eaten, she wants to eat with us too.

Napoleon could care less if he is with you or not... he just wants to eat!

both my dogs do the same thing, they will come in to see if we are still around while chewing their food and then go back eat alittle and come out again chewing. as long as they are eating i dont care. and its kind of funny where as my rotti will sometimes take one piece at a time , which takes forever, but its funny to see this big dog eating little pieces one at a time.

Samantha is almost 5 years old and STILL does this... While we are eating she will eat too, but her food is in the dining area where we are and she will take about 5 pieces and walk over to the carpet and eat it there (which is away from us about 5 to 6 feet) and come back and do it again... No one here will mess with her while she eats (we don't like to be messed with while we eat) and she's not an aggressive eater, I mean we can bend down and take the food away or even out of her mouth if we need to with out any problems, but she just does this... I thought maybe it was cause the floor is lanolium (sp) but there is a rug in the kitchen (3 feet from her bowl). I guess I will just chalk it up as a dog thing. My sister said about 50% of all the dogs she has seen does it too..

Sascha does this too! But, I don't think she does it cause she's scared or anything, I think she's just so curious about everything that she can't stand in one place long enough to eat her meal...and the other thing that happens is she'll get little pieces of food stuck in her lips, and not even realize they're there, so every once in a while after she eats you'll see her two rooms away from her food bowl and suddenly she'll just be eating! It's so cute!
