Hi folks. I tried some different searches, but nothing I needed. Once in a while when tyson eats, he'll eat alot and he'll eat fast. Then he'll hack it up a few seconds later. Then he'll eat that again. Not to sure why he does that. If anybody has some advice, that would be great. Also, when I try to feed him some of his kibble out of my hand, he wont eat it. (He does the chest down butt in air thing. Maybe he thinks it's a game?)I never tried this till now and i've had him since he was like 9 weeks. (speaking of which, his birthday is the 27 of this month, 1 yr old!) he'll eat veggies and stuff out of my hand just not his food. Again, any help would be great. Thanks.

when apollo was a puppy he would eat too fast for his own good and as a result ended up throwing up his food. this is a common reaction for eating too fast. the easiest way to cure this problem would be to try placing a large rock or ball in his feeding dish to make him work a bit at getting his food. this will in turn, slow him down a bit and hopefully prevent him from eating too fast. i used two tennis balls with apollo and it helped instantly. eventually the tennis balls would get soaked with slobber so i switched to an old bocce ball because it was non-porous and would accumulate bacteria. just be sure to wipe down or change the tennis balls every so often to make sure they don't get any bad bacteria in their food. you can even use an old billiard ball or two.
as for the eating out of your hand thing, it sounds as if he thinks it's a game.

I tried the ball and rock with Napoleon, neither worked. He would just take it out of his bowl. If he couldn't get it out, he would turn his bowl over.

Now, I give his meal in thirds. He gets one third, when he is finished, he gets a little more, and so on. He eats much slower and has to stop in between.

The only problem I have is he wants his bowl off the floor, we have always had it elevated until a few weeks ago and he doesn't like it on the floor at all.
He will actually sit and bark at it for a few minutes before he starts eating.
The chance of bloat scares me so it is staying on the floor, I guess he will get used to it.

Good Luck!

This is what I do also. But I recently heard of using a puppy dish, like those round bunt cake pans, helps also.

Hi

I posted something about my Bailey in the Behavioral issuses forum. You should read some of them! My Baybay eats like its a race we have 4 dogs and she is always done first no matter what! She chokes all the time and I have to help her breath. It scares the crap out of me! I dont know if she'll be ok or not so we always babysit her when she eats. I used to feed her by hand so she could only get a handfull down not 2! lol.Well check it out. I wish you the best of luck We are still working on it but I had some good advise! GOOD LUCK!!

Bloating

Now the breeder told me about the bloating possibility and told me to mix water in the food so that won't happen but that just gives them the runs. How likely is the bloating I mean is it common. I always woory about that too.

Do a search for bloat and you will find a lot of information. Adding water really doesn't make a difference in helping with bloat BUT If the kibble you feed uses Citric Acid as a preservative you are actually increasing the risk of bloat if you add water to it.
