eating through collar

Ok so here is my problem my baby girl Lucy can eat through a collar in no time flat. Let me start by saying that she is microchipped and stays inside. But when I take her to the store (PetsMart) the park or anyplace where she has to be leashed (and collared) and we have to take a car to get there she tears up her collar. I have been through several different types and the last was a chest harness one thinking where it sat on her body she would not be able to get to it. Much to my shigrin on a trip this past weekend to the park (which is about only 20 minutes away) she has about 1/2 of the nylon strap chewed up. So when I got her home and took it off I noticed. Here is the weird part of all this she is not a big chewer at home. She has her own toys and pillow and will play with her things but will generally leave the skin kids toys alone(after lots of work). I am just finding myself at a dead end on this particular issue and I tried to look at the link under the collars thread but the link seems to be broken. So I would love any suggestions you guys might have for me. Thanks.

How on earth does she manage to get a collar into her mouth when it's around her neck? LOL - sounds like a little Houdini.

I wonder if you've got her collars on too loosely? The collar should be fitted snugly - snugly enough that you should be able to insert two fingers between it and her neck, but no more. If it is looser than that (and it must be, if she can get her jaw in there to chew), then it is too loose. Loose collars are a bit of a hazard - they can get hooked on things, and other dogs playing with her can get their jaws stuck in there too (I'm afraid there are a few horror stories on these forums where dogs have been strangled to death by other dogs getting their jaws stuck in too-loose collars). I'd suggest fitting her collar rather more snugly and see if that doesn't make a difference.

-i was on the same thought path as gwyneth was above. your dog's collar has to be on too loosely in order for them to get it. you want a snug fit BUT not a tight one. same thing goes for the harness.
-if you continue to have problems, you can also try spraying some apple bitter onto the nylon collars so that they might get detered from chewing.
-you might also want to take some chew toys along with you for the ride to the park so that she gets distracted by the toys and doesn't chew her collar, but again i think that once you adjust the fit of the collar you're no longer going to have a problem.
