Hope this is the right place to post this....Anyone else had a problem with a puppy eating kitty litter out of the litter box? (Yuck!) Angel is 10 weeks old, and can't stay away from the litter box. The simple answer is: move it to where she can't get to it, but that's not possible...Your thoughts/experiences appreciated!

Thanks!

Brutus had this problem too. I ended up blocking off the room with a child safety gate. The cat could easily jump over it and Brutus couldn't get to his temptation anymore.

i think if it's not possible to get it where he can't get to it,then there's
probably nothing you can do so he will stop.i have the litter box in the bathroom and have a baby gate at the door.

Both of mine would get into the litter box if they could. My litter box is in the laundy room next to the laundry tub so I put a safety gate across and it works great. Hope I could be of some help to you.

I don't know if this works or not for kitty litter, but I have heard that if the puppy is getting into things like kitty litter and you catch them take a water spray bottle and squirt them and they do not like this so they will associate the kitty litter with getting sprayed with the water bottle. This has worked with my puppy on other things.

Thanks to everyone -- I will try the baby gate, however, Angel is already CLIMBING the one that we used to block her in the kitchen, so I'm not sure if that will work. The spray bottle is one that I will try, too. I can easily catch her in the act, because the minute she goes into the bathroom (where the litter box is) she makes a beeline for the litter!

Keep your fingers crossed - -will let you know what happens!

I am so glad someone else has this problem!

We have an older can who cannot jump as well, so we had to install a "kitty" door on the laundry room door. The cats can go in and out and Beau cannot get to the litter box.

We tried all the other stuff and absolutely could not break him from "snacking" in the litter box. That is SO disgusting!

also had this problem

we ended up putting the litter box in a decorative trunk where the cat could get in but the dogs can't. there are some out there commercially, covered in carpet and with plastic liners. my husband took a blanket chest and cut a hole in the back and we lined it with the same stuff used to cover crib mattresses. a friend actually put the litter box in a cabinet and cut a hole small enough for only the cat to get through. we also had tried the gate, and all sorts of other options, but T-Rex would actually flip the cover off the covered box if he could get access. what a mess! good luck.

Lexie had this problem too. I just turned the litter box towards the wall and left enough room for the cats to get in and out. Worked like a charm. Lexie doesn't even go near it now, its almost like she forgot it is there.

I have this same problem with a senior cat. I put the baby gate quite high up on the doorway, so there's enough room for the cat to squeeze underneath, but not the dog (this probably wouldn't work for a puppy, but Lola is full grown). Also, this way, I think it's a little too high for Lola to feel like she could just jump over it. We'll see though...she can jump really high when she wants to, I'm just hoping this will deter her enough.
