First of all this is my first post so I shall introduce myself - I am Ann and Have a 7 (almost 8) year old Male red boxer.
Last year he started having trouble eating hard large bits of dog roll (or anything ) so we started him on dry food and can food (softer mix) - this was ok for a little while. We went away so put him in the local kennels. This was for 4 nights (5 days) He lost so much weight and looked very out of condition. We have tried to put the weight on him by getting performance dry food (recommended by the vet) and also i made 'satin balls' which I googled about. This did make his coat lovely and put some weight on but as soon as we stopped it he lost the weight again - Satin balls are VERY expensive to make and so can not feed them to him full time - and I feel if he is losing weight that quick there must be something happening inside to do this.
He was making a funny sneezing/coughing noise which the vet said it was a an inward sneeze - one nostril was weeping and so we got him on antibiotics and he stopped the inward sneezing and the nose weeping cleared up (it was a creamy green colour) he seemed to be better.
after feeding him heaps of satin balls etc... for 6 months he has only put on 1kg.
the other weekend we ran out of the performance dog biscuits so fed him canned food alone - one day and he had lost weight and looked awful again.
he is now throthing a lot with eating (started this last year but got a bit better) and will gag on food. he dribbles alot more than he ever did.
The vets have done all the bloods and we got the dye and xray as they sent it down the throat and into the gut to find out if there was anything obstructing his eating ( for the gagging and regurgitating food with lots of bile)
We don't know what to do and I have joined this board in the hope someone has experienced this and can shed some light on what it might be.
Please note he seems happy in himself and not suffering. Wee's and Poo's fine. He is not as active as he use to be but putting this to age (as he still get very excited when people visit like he always did)
Please help us get to the bottom of this - we are heading away soon (for a couple of weeks) and hoping to get a dog sitter but may have to put him in the kennels again and with the anxiety of us leaving him and him running around with the other dogs we are frightened at how much weight he will loose.
Oh and the anxiety I think is another problem we have!
