Hello,

Brought BigPapi34 to the vet this morning, yeast in both ears, gave me Clavamox and Mometamax, and the good DR said Yeast infections in boxers were common.

Would you please share your yeast stories with me and if you have any hints on how to prevent this from happening in the future, would you please pipe in?

Thanks!
Claire

Lola is prone to yeast infections :( Food allergies cause yeast infections if I'm not wrong (help me out here if I am) Try changing his diet to find a food that doesn't cause this, that's what I'm doing. She's on Salmon & rice at the moment and her ears are ok BUT she's chewing her paws :(

Food allergies can cause yeast infections, also any pH imbalance can cause yeast infection. An allergic reaction to ANYTHING can cause an imbalance, which, if it gets out of hand, can cause a yeast infection.

I have been researching this very topic quite a bit lately (Caney's got issues wackicon) and have found a few websites to be very helpful:

http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/systemic_yeast_infections_candida_albicans.htm

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2102&aid=321

So basically anything that compromises the immune system can contribute to the overgrowth of yeast (genius, right?) So good health is important. You can also give her plain yogurt daily to increase to good bacteria in her gut, and I've also heard that a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar added to her drinking water will slightly alter her pH enough to keep yeast at bay. Might be worth trying :)

Oh, almost forgot -- it tends to manifest in moist areas on the body, so keeping her clean and dry in those spots (ears, folds of skin/wrinkles, groin, armpits, pads of feet) might help too.

Just had this with Hurricane (from an allergic reaction yes) and the vet gave me a solution of something (smells like peroxide but I know that isn't it) to dry out the ears plus lotrimin (anti fungal) to use whenever we saw one coming on. Nice to have, although of course finding the trigger of the allergy is most important. He gave me a big bottle and said it would last in the fridge for months... so we have plenty on hand in case of another flare up.
