Hi again, my Simba is not Earcropped and my Vet was delited, because he thinks it is not needed. With my new baby I'm thinking about getting the Ears done, but I'm also leery, because my little five year old boy (human) thinks the dog is nothing but a big toy and we really have to get on him at times to leave the dog alone. I know that the Ears will be sore for about a week and there is no guarantee that they will stand. So anyone out there who can give me a tip on how to deal with this dilemma.:D

Hi there,

Ear cropping is a personal choice. I personally like the look of the cropped boxer. Many people like the uncropped. First of all, finding a vet that can do a good job is most important. Veterinarians have never been taught how to do a good crop, when in school. Vets that do a good job have an interest in doing it properly. It also requires some artistic talent. Most vets do not have the eye to crop properly. If you see a nice crop, ask the owner who did it. Likewise for a really bad crop. :)

You will have to plan on keeping the pup from your five year old for 10-14 days. Most ears do stand, but require some work on your part. Many stand after only 3-5 tapings. Some require months of work.

I would suggest you talk to the breeder and see if they are knowledgable and will to help with the aftercare.

:D

Hey, thanks for the great reply, it really helped me alot. Just as I wanted to reply that little five year old boy of mine knocked my whold power out as he stumbled over his brother who was laying on the floor. What exitement. Thank God all is alright. I know a good Vet, that does a good job too. My breeder had her Boxers Ears done there and they look great. :)

As it was mentioned above, first and most important is to find a vet that is good at it.
Our Zeus had his cropped at 8 wks old I believe and 4 weeks later his ears were ready and looking good!

1st week - ears stitched up, kind of bloody and scabbing. He wanted to scratch them alot so we bought booties to put on his feet when we weren't able to watch his every step. Ears tapped up to a small cup resting on his head (upside down).

2nd week - stitches removed but ears still kind of scabby. Cup still on his head.

3rd week = most scabs are gone, cup removed and replaced with two sticks tapped to his ears connected in the middle.

4th week - scabs are gone, everything healed up, ears retapped with the two sticks.

5th week - After 4th week and only 2 tappings, his ears are standing up beautifully! :)

We got lucky with Zeus since most dogs take longer, even 3 months before their ears stand. However, I would say plan on having the little one away from the puppy for AT LEAST 2 weeks.

Hope this helps and if you want to see some pics of Zeus with his ears, I have pictures from almost each week when he had his ears done on my website.

Thanks for the input thus far...

We've yet to get our 1st Boxer, but that was a delimma between my better half and I. I like the look the ears cropped, and she doesn't mind it, but doesn't want to put the dog through any unnecissary pain.

Croppying of the ears is purely asthetic? No health benefits? reduced ear infections...etc?

Her main concern was the pain. If there is no benefit but asthetics, I can live with out them cropped aswell.

Thanks!

That's correct, there is no health benefit to cropping. It's just a matter of personal preference.

The pain of surgery is relatively short-lived, but the taping can be a lot of work...or it can be easy, too. It will help if you know someone with a lot of experience with the taping to help you through that part.

When we brought home our first Boxer, I did not want to crop. My husband did. Neither of us had any true experience with a cropped breed so we both were just going off our inner thoughts. I had a neighbor who cropped their Dane when I was a small child. I had an earlier memory of him walking around with a "hat rack" on to train the ears.

Well, my husband won. I contacted folks in the local Boxer club to help me find a qualified vet. THAT was the best decision I ever made. This vet did a fabulous job, club members helped me tape the ears and Crystal has an incredible ear crop.
You can see photos of her here:

Even though I had no goals to show her, the right ear crop at least made sure she looked fantastic!

The price varies as much as the prices between quality bred pups. In some areas folks pay $150-$200 for a crop. The vet I used charges about $400 for a crop. But then, I do live in the San Francisco Bay Area :)
