ear problem

my boxer strider has cuts in his ears. I just took him out of his kennle this morning and while he was outside I noticed blood in his right ear. I took him inside and cleaned both his ears. I found a cut in his right ear and to spots in his left ear where he was bleeding. I didn't see any earmites. Any suggestions? Should I treat him for earmites anyway.

I wouldn't treat for ear mites unles a vet has diagnosed it. Are the ears itchy,red,have a smell or browinsh red "gunk" that can be wiped out?

Does he scratch his ears?
Dallas used to make a mess of her ears because she was always scratching!
She actually scratched so bad that she gave herself a haematoma (sp??). basically she popped the blood vessels in her ear which caused her ear to fill up with blood under the skin into a really huge bump & required surgery to fix.

Strider might be causing the damage himself if he has itchy ears that he's been scratching at.

Just a thought..... i agree wtih sidhewlf though about not treating for something if you're not sure that's what it is. you might make whatever the real problem is worse by doing that??

I hope he gets better soon & hopefully someone else on here can give you some better advice.

Lola has cut the inside of her ears through scratching before, scratching at their ears is a sign of allergies.

Boze is definitely a scratcher too. He would stick his whole paw in his ear as far as it would go and just itch and itch when we first got him. In our case, it turned out to be an ear infection that no one at his old house had taken care of that had gotten out of control....His itching was his way of telling us it hurt, like when a toddler tugs on their ear when its infected.
Has Strider been checked for infections? Also, we have to continue to wash Boze's ears with a special solution, and he usually has a little of a reddish brown drainage... I vote a trip to the vet to have things looked at before you just start doing anything.

does a brownish gunk always mean that there are mites or an infection or could it just be build up...i noticed my dog had dirty ears last night, i wiped them out but one of them had more "gunk" than the other one...but, she is not tilting her head, or doing the head shake and flopping her ears, or scratching at them...there is not redness, they both look pink and clean...Could it be that I was a slacker for too long and it got extra dirty...it had been a few weeks since I last wiped them out...and I just use regular white vinegar to clean them...
