Ear Mites?

I was looking in my pups ears today and I noticed that they were extremely dirty. I cleaned them out and about 5 Q-tips later she was clean. Her ears are NOT docked. Do boxers tend to get Ear Mites easily? How often should I clean her ears?

When I first brought Diva home her ears were the same way. The vet gave us ear drops that we gave her 2 drops in each ear twice a day. We used that for about 10 days and it cleared it right up.
The vet also gave us some sort of cleaning solution that I use to clean her ears once a week.

yep same with me, when i brogh kadie home she also had ear mites. and worms and we got pills and ear drops now there all gone.

I don't think boxers are more prone to ear mites than any other dog. Just keeping the ears clean is an easy preventative. However, q-tips are not so good. I was told by a vet along time ago to never put q-tips into a dogs ear. They can be so jumpy and nervous, as a dogs ears are extremely sensitive, and a q-tip can easily slip and damage their ear drums.
Washing the ears is best done with a warm washcloth with a mild soap. A good tip that was also handed down to me by my vet was that incase of an ear mite infestation, olive oil applied to the infected area works just as well as prescribed medication from the vet. Xena had ear mites when she was 2. She had them at the tips of her ears. I applied olive oil to the area daily, rubbing it in good for 15-20 min. The olive oil "suffocates" the mites and they die. It worked for me and I still use it as a preventative.

Is it okay if the some of the olive oil would go down the dogs ears?

Our rabbit had ear mites. The OTC meds works great but you have to use exactly like the instructions recommend.

Tess had ear mites too when I first brought her home. You need to have them treated by a vet, but once they clear up, just clean her ears with an OTC ear cleaner once a week or so. Tess gets so much garb in her ears. I have to stay on top of cleaning.

There's no mistaking the stench of ear mites, so if it's a bit nasty smelling, definitely get her treated ASAP.

Hope they get better soon. It's nothing to worry about, but is quite irritating for them.
