This website has given me insight on fly away ears. I have tried to massage and even tape my pups ears to get the right fold in them.. I have researched the techniques and feel i am doing them right. I tried Tapeing but my pup scratches at this ears and the tape does not stay on. I got my pup from a BYB and now i see how i should of really looked at the parents physical features more closely to see how he might look when he is older. I have pictures of the mother that i took and her ears do not lay flat like the boxer standard. The fathers ears do but they are kind of small , he is a big dog with a big head..lol.. So my question is am i doing the massaging and tapeing in vain. is it inevitable that his ears will not lay right regardless. Also is there anyone out there who has done this technique and it actually worked in the end, and how long will it take. I have noticed his ears from massaging them stay in the right position for longer now , then they fold back.

If your pup is anywhere near teething stage the ears will be flying all over the place anyway. The action of pushing up new teeth causes the cartilage to soften. Don't give up, if you had cropped the ears you would have several months of taping to get them to stand, shaping a natural ear can take as long.

Ear fold

I understand that teething makes the ears fly. But what if the ears dont even have the right fold in them. they want to lay back. You can see the whole inside of his ears. . If the Mother has ears that dont lay down correctly does my pup have a chance of inheriting the same kind of ear structure that makes the ears not sit correctly.. Does it have to do with heredity?..

The ear leather and the ear set are most definitely inheritable. The only reason mom has fly away ears is because they were left to set that way. Cartilege begins forming in the ear leather from birth, the sooner you begin training the ear the better the chance you have of it looking correct. That's true for natural and cropped ears alike.

So, to answer you question, yes there is a chance that the ears will look like moms, but only if you don't stay after it. If you stay committed to training proper ear lay, chances are very good that they won't. :D

My toshi's ears went crazy since he started teething. they are all over the place. Both of his parents have their ears set correctly, so I was wondering if I should wait for them to get back to normal after the teething stops, or should I massage them just in case?

I didn't realize you needed to work with un-cropped ears? My boy's ears also do as described...fall straight back so you can see the inside of the ear... I had always just thought he would grow into his boxer type ears:(

So how old is too old to start working with them? My boy is a year so is he going to have the ears he was born with or could I be doing some work with taping and massaging?
