Pokey has a ear infection. What do you all use to keep your babies ears clean?

Also, does your boxer let the vet clean their ears? I have never seen Pokey act the way he did, he was AWFUL! I know it was not comfortable for him, and since he has been very leary about me touching his ear.

I use an ear cleanser that the vet gave me after one of our boxers had an ear infection. I usually take about 3 cotton balls, squirt the solution all over the cotton, and then stick it in their ear, shut the ear and press/rub for a few seconds...then take it out. That let's the ear solution drip down into their ear. I then use a q-tip (very carefully) to get some of the waxy stuff out. My older boxer will sit there and let me do it....but the younger one i lay on his side and do it that way, and he's more comfortable.

My 18 month old pup (natural ears) had an ear infection in December. It appeared two days after arriving in Florida. She was really scratching and digging at her ear and it was all red, by the time I really paid attention to it. I took her to the Vet and he cleaned the ear with “OtiCalm”, a cleaning solution. The Vet had an apprentice, that held her head tightly, while he cleaned her ear. He squirted a lot of the solution into her ear, then used cotton balls to clean the ear. Then he put a few drops of “Otomax” an antibiotic to promote healing. He sent me home with the solution and the Otomax to continue the cleaning twice a day for two weeks and then to clean the ears at least every two weeks. The very next day, her ear appeared normal, the red was gone. She quit scratching it too. But the first time I tried to clean her ears I found out why he had the apprentice hold her head. She would not let me near her ear if she could see the bottle of solution. I had to hold her head while someone else cleaned the ear, it was impossible to hold her head and squirt in the solution. If I did get some solution squirted in her ear she would do the head shake and cover me, the walls and everything else with the stuff. There didn’t seem to be any pain involved, just sensitive ears. After two weeks she still hated it and it still takes two to clean her ears. This was my first experience with ear infections.

The solution he provided was a 12 ounce bottle of OtiCalm, by DVM Pharmaceutical Inc. Miami Fl. The antibiotic Otomax requires a prescription.

i find just using warm water and putting a cream on shila's ears is enough to combat any infections.she has had bad ears since she was born and i have tried everything.

Thanks so much for the info. The vet gave me the Otomax, I will see if I can get some of the Otocalm to help keep his ears clean.

When I bath him I usually clean his ears with warm water and a wash cloth, you can tell he doesn't like it, but he tolerates it. However, after this infection his ears have become super-sensitive! It's like he turns into a DEMON when you try to clean them.

I know exactly what you mean! Krose is the same way.

He's had numerous ear infections. He hates it when the vet cleans his ears. he hates it when I put a ointment in his ear. You should see him afterwards though, his ear goes all the way down!! :p

Anyway, after tha last medicine the vet put in his ear, he said that it would be awhile, if never, he has an infection again.

This was like 8months ago appicon

I'll tell you the name when I get home;)

The oinment was "Otomax". I have found it on the Bullwrinkle site. I does require a prescription from a vet. I still put a drop in her ears each time I clean them.

Hope that helps.
