ear hematoma

Hi. My 8 year old boxer has a hematoma on his right ear. It is medium sized and the vet wants to do the surgery, which makes me nervous due to Baxie's age. Has anyone had any luck with just having it drained and filled with antibiotics? Any advice would be great.

I don't mind if his ear ends up looking a little funny. I just don't want him to be in any pain (it doesn't seem to bother him at all right now) or put him through unneccesary surgery. Thanks for your help!

Brady had one which we had drained but it filled up again. We had the option of having the surgery but I decided against it. He is only 3 but I didn't want to put him under anasthetic for a cosmetic procedure. He isn't a show dog and I didn't care what his ear looked like. The vet said it would eventually dry up on its own but would be curled up. It wook a few weeks for it to dry up and it is curled up a bit. It isn't as bad as it was because I rub it alot. The scar tissue has softened up and let loose a bit.

I was going to post a picture so you could see what it looked like b ut my camera battery is dead and I just realized I haen't unpacked the charger yet and have no clue where it is. Later I will go upstairs and get my SLR and take and post a picture.

Thank you so much--I'd love to see the picture. I'm glad things worked out for you.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to do the surgery--just don't want to put him through that for cosmetic reasons. He seems fine and it's on the outer part of his ear so wouldn't block his ear canal or anything. He's never had ear infections. I think it happened when he banged into the table the other day (over excited for his walk).

I have read about having it drained and then putting him on a decreasing dose of prednisone for two weeks which I may ask the vet about.

Thanks again--it is so nice to talk with someone who has been through the same thing.

Nessea Had one

Nessea had a hematoma on her ear also. She was about 8 too I think. They drained it and she had a tube inserted that I had to drain daily . She had it removed and it healed up just fine.

Was his hematoma very large to begin with? Thank you so much for sending the photos--I am feeling a lot better about not doing the surgery.

hey
my previous boxer adrian, had one and had it removed. it was non cancer but the vet said with the age and the type of dog its comon she wasnt under long we let her stay over night as it can bleed because of all the veins that are in the ears.

I would say it was about half of his ear. I have a picture of it somewhere. I looked a little bit but couldn't find, will have to look deeper into the many pictures. As soon as I find it, I will post it. Good luck and I think you made the right decision.

a hematoma isn't something that can really be removed. It is when the ear fills up with blood because a blood vessel inside broke. They can be drained and there is a surgery to "pie crust" the ear so it doesn't happen again.
