We are bringing our puppy home from getting his ears cropped tommorrow & wanted to know if any of you guys had any good suggestions on how we can comfort & take care of him in his next few painful days.

This is all new to us and we don't know what to expect or what needs to be done. I'm sure that the vet will tell us what to do but we wanted to get some assurance & experiences from you because we are both a little nervous.

Moving Thread

Hi Russ, I'm moving this to the Dog Health section. If you do a search on the board on 'ear cropping' you will find many helpful posts about this. Hopefully some of our members who have been through this will assist you.

When we got Ruby she had her ears taped already and I'm not sure how long prior to us adopting that she had them done. I do remember the warning to not to get the tape wet as it will be hard to remove when you need to change the tape.
I would also just recommend lots of extra attention, toys and maybe a few treats. Ruby seemed fine with the whole process; even when her ears had to be taped and re-taped during the course of a few months.
Good luck and welcome to the board!

Samson did not have too much trouble with the ear tapings, he just kept trying to scratch at his ears. Our vet suggested putting socks on his hind feet to protect his ears if he does happen to start scratching. Here is what I did, I put the socks on him, stuck my finger inside, then wrapped a strip of masking tape around his leg, then folded the sock over, it worked great. Also you want to keep the ears and tape dry, any moisture in there can cause an infection, just keep a close watch and if you smell any odors call your vet. Good Luck, the aftercare is a lot of work but well worth it.

My first Boxer was a little unhappy the first day, I held her most of the time and felt lousy. She did ok until she tried laying under a place that she use to fit, those taped ears would not allow her to fit! My other Boxers have had their ears done before they left the Breeders. Just had to tape and re-tape for several months. Everyone tapes different ways. If you have a problem let me know and I will tell you what we used.

Our little Ellie just got her ears done 10 days ago. When I got to the vet to pick her up she had an E-Collar on and the vet had turned it around so it would go around her body insteadb of around her head. I left it on for the ride home, after getting home and she was so excited to see the other two Boxers we have and her Daddy she forgot about it and tried to go up the steps, she tripped over but when she was going down the steps she fell. That collar came off and we just kept an eye on her. The first evening home she slept but after that she was fine. her and Daisy would wrestle and play and have a good time like before. However Daisy left her ears alone and Ellie did try and scratch mostly at the the tape across her head. A week later we went back to get them rewrapped but they looked pretty good and so he took out all the stitches. We now wrap them with tape and tampons and it is not a fun chore she is a little on the wild side. But just make sure they stay dry and your pup don't scatch them.

The tampon trick is great!!! That is how we did it also. Don't those collars drive you crazy. I had to put one on one of mine one time and she hit a huge old glass water jar full of marbles with it knocking it over. I came into the house and had thousands of marbles all over the tile floors, yikes.

pls post and tell us how the puppy is doing. Although I do like the look of the cropped boxer, I could never do it becasue I am a CHICKEN and I would never want to see my beloved pet suffer just becasue I wanted them to look a certain way. I am not being mean, just honest. curious though, I would like to know the results and if it's a pain in the neck so far.

thanks:)

Update

Thanks to all of you who responded w/ your advise & comments.

Well, Baron got his ears cropped on Thursday morning & had to stay overnight @ the vet. That was the toughest part - we missed him alot & knew that he would miss his favorite blanket & toys.

We didn't know how he would be feeling when he got home on Friday afternoon. We thought that he would be really groggy & in pain & not really be himself. Well, other than wanting to scratch his ears alot, he is his old, usual, mischievious self. He still plays ALL the time like usual. He hasn't seemed to have experienced much pain, except when he scratches on the stitches, so we havn't even had to give him many pain killers (only two).

Oh, another thing is how pathetic he looks! His little ears are taped together. Because he likes to scratch all the time, we have bought little baby socks for him and taped them on his feet w/ masking tape. It looks like he has two little broken legs.

Overall, we think that his ears are doing really good so far. We can't wait untill we get to take that tape off for good (I'm sure that he feels the same).

Sincerly,

Russ, Luz, & Baron

Ears

When Riggs came to us he had his ears done and I took him ot to the Vet to get them retaped consistently for about 9 months. He hated this. Then he got one of them stuck in the fence (wire) and nothing was the same after that (for either one of us). My heart wasn't in it and he gave me dirty looks when we went to the vet. So I stopped bringing him, we were happy and he has one ear that curves in a little. It's cute. I wish you the best:).
