I'm just starting to research Boxers and will probably get a show quality dog someday.

My question is, if you show your Boxer, do the ears have to be cropped?

This topic has been covered ad naseum. You can find plenty of coverage on this topic using the search button.

If you hope to get into conformational showing, the typical response is "study the standard". http://americanboxerclub.org/illstand/illstand14.htm

What the standard says about ears: Set at the highest points of the sides of the skill are cropped, cut rather long and tapering, raised when alert.

In short, no, you don't have to crop the ears. However, it is considered a deviation of the standard and is judged as such. It takes a terrific speciman to have a successful career uncropped. It can and has been done, but it's no easy task.

Naw, we aren't nauseous, just want to let everyone know about all the collective knowledge available here on BW that can be accessed with the Search button. gradicon

Besides, after enough time goes by, I think every question that can be asked, probably has been, in one form or another.

JUst showed my natural eared boy

My natural eared boy was in his first show....people may say they are open to the idea of a natural eared boy, but the majority are not. He did well, but was REALLY scrutinized by the judges, but in all fairness, they didn't excuse him so I can't complain.

Personally, I could care less about cropping....but it is an issue to contend with. I also had people who came up and told me what a nice puppy I had and how much they appreciated someone who had the guts to put one in the ring.

I think he is going to the ABC so if you go, he'll be hard to miss....he'll probably be the only one there ;)

Good Luck!

I am not a show person, but I remember watching a dog show on animal planet a year or so ago and the best in show dog was a boxer with natural ears! I love that look so much and I am glad it is no longer looked down upon in show rings. There is no need for it anymore

My guess is you were watching a Crufts show, from England, where natural ears are the norm.

It's done out of personal preference, not necessity.

Are you sure it was a BIS win? Even if it was Crufts, a Boxer didn't take BIS.

Don't I wish!;)
