Just to share that I had to get my girl's tail amputated when she was about 16 months old - like Sube Ru it was necessary since she had a rampant infection in her tail.

Although she fared well and was back to herself pretty much within a few days, the first few days were absolutely horrible. SHe was in pain and it was really brutal to see. although she healed fast, it took months for her to get over the fact that the tail was no longer there. It broke my heart to see her looking for it all the time.

In my opinion, unless medically necessary, I would NEVER put any dog through that. Unless done within days of birth, it is amputation plain and simple.

Hope that helps - more of a "been there" kind of story.

Congrats on your new baby - if you need advice, you've come to the right place!! Welcome to BW

Do you have any pictures of her with her amputated tail? I have never seen a boxer that had their tail removed at that age.

I noticed you have not stated whether or not her dew claws were removed, and I take it that if the breeder did not dock the tail then the dew claws are likely not to have been removed. If they have indeed not been removed, than I suggest that you make an apointment as soon as possible to have them removed. Dew claws will snag on things and can create extraordinary amounts of pain for a boxer. This procedure is done because it is vital to the dogs health that they be removed.
If she does still have her dewclaws, ask your Vet to remove them and he/she should know exactly what to do.

IMO, the dew claws do not need to be removed if they are still intact. I do agree that they should be removed as a pup to remove the chance of them getting snagged but if they are intact and are causing no problem then I wouldn't worry about it at all. I'm sure it would be quite painful to have them removed now...that's why they are done within the first 5 days. When done at the proper time there's very little if any pain.:)

Pru will be 3 yrs old this month...her dew claws are intact and she's never had a problem.

Troy,

I just got myj new puter and am working on some of the glitches - once I am up and running I am going to attempt to get some pics of my babies on BW....I will try to remember to take a nice stubby tail shot for you.

I am really happy with how it turned out. It looked a but like a hammer for a while but has rounded out more since. I guess it took about 3 months to look normal. There is a little bit of extra skin where the swelling was but you don't notice it all all unless you actually touch her tail.

Declaws- Rescue will have the declaws removed if the dog is older only under 1 circumstance- the dog is going to be put under anyways.
We have a girl right now that has her tail and declaws. but she is spayed so she will stay that Au Natural. To put a dog under just because of declaws is not really neccessary.
but my advice is keep an eye on her. If for any reason she starts to bleed or it gets snagged, get her to a vet ASAP!!!

dewclaws

Sundance had one dewclaw removed at 10 weeks of age while his ears were cropped. He had a few stitches and tape around his foot. He wasn't bothered by it at all. I say have it removed.
