I crop my guys and will as long as I can. After the crop the ears are glued with Surgical Skin Bond (which is flexible) to a styrofoam cup. The edge of the ear is not taped or covered. I do not allow scabs to form and keep an ointment on the edge until all healed. After all healed (usually eight days) and the sutures have been removed, I then begin taping. No posts down the ears and nothing to bother the puppy.

Yes, it is cosmetic surgery, but no, it rarely bothers one of my pups. They are up and playing within hours of the surgery. Some pups only require a few tapings, but most do require several months of taping once or twice a week. I have never had an ear that did not stand, but yes, some took up to a year of taping.

You need to find an experienced vet and probably a breeder that can help you with the taping. Many vets do not know how to tape the ears properly. It does not have to be a Boxer breeder. Please pay the breeder for their time and bring whatever tape they like to use.

Since most vets do not have an artistic talent to even crop ears, you need to find a good one. I agree that a bad crop ruins the look. I would rather see the ears left natural than have a bad ear crop.

Why risk it? It's cosmetic. Personally, I think the ears have a lot of personality in them and you can rub them and they are soft :) I too liked the cropped look at first, but now like floppy better. My family had a doberman. We got her ears cropped and she was just miserable throughout the whole thing. When she passed and we got a male dobe, we decided it just wasn't worth it.
