I have just come back from an obiedience trainer. It was our first session. He reccomended an e collar. As I am new to this any feedback from the forum on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a fan of e-collars, prong collars.....anything of that nature.

You can train a dog without having to shock or poke them to do what you want. That's my opinion. I'm in the process of working with my boxer and he is doing great. Lots of practice and praise and I see him improving everyday.

not positive about e collars , per say, BUT i am pretty sure it falls into the category of "neg" training , which is a forbidden topic here.

Find a new trainer!! Please don't put an e-collar on your dog!

Do a search on these forums for ideas on positive training techniques. What behaviors are you trying to change? Maybe we can help you come up with a safe and non-abusive training method for your dog.

It's not that they are "negative" training tools, it is that they are "punishment" based training tools. In the training world the words mean very different things which is why it is very hard to pick a trainer based on what words they use to describe their methods. It is best to see them in action.

And, yes, e-collars are an off-limits topic for this forum.

Thank you to the posters in this thread, and their respect for the site rules As written there, we believe wholeheartedly in positive training methods, and will not allow punishment based training to be promoted on the site.

To the OP: I would underline this posting:

Do a search on these forums for ideas on positive training techniques. What behaviors are you trying to change? Maybe we can help you come up with a safe and non-abusive training method for your dog.

If you have questions about how you can use positive, reward-based training to solve your issues, do post a new thread (or threads, if its multiple issues) asking for help. I will close this thread, however, as its title and early posts (i.e. people don't read several posts down to find the real questions, they mainly respond to the original post only) isn't likely to generate a great many responses.
