Durable Beds?

I have spent HUNDREDS of $ on bedding for my babies. Not sure why since they spend more time on the couch and on MY bed then in their own.

Anyway back to the story - because Angel gets a little stiff, I thought getting one of those really expensive orthopedic type beds for dogs would be a good idea (you know the memory foam stuff). Well it lasted about 3 hours - chunks of foam everywhere!!

I was just about to give up when I decided to take a couple of old comforters (I have about 4 or 5 that I rotate on my bed) and folded up to fit in their crates. It was a miracle! The rearrange to their liking (pulling and tugging to make the perfect bed) but they don't tear them up!! I think it's because they have slept on the bed and these comforters remind them of mommy's bed.

Danny is a bed-destroyer as well - I think some dogs use it as a form of enrichment and amusement once they've learned how to do it. He has an old blanket of mine in his crate now. I bought him a cooling bed to use this summer because my bedroom gets pretty stuffy in the summer - he put his teeth into it within 3 days - water everywhere! ... grrrrrr... smashicon

Rocky has a crib mattress that I got for free off of craigslist. The girl even gave him a mattress pad and a t-shirt type sheet for it. He ruined all those fluffy beds. And even better, it was free!

Touzy,

Do you mind if I share your information on making the dog beds with some of my friends? I plan to make one for mine and have some friends who are looking for a pattern as well. Just wanted to ask!

Thanks!

Go for it

I'm so sorry it took me this long to get back to you.
Someone was just writing about a dog bed recently and
I came searching for this thread. By all means, please,
GO FOR IT! :)
I have one more hint... IF you can find a metal zipper
instead of a nylon one it might be better.
SOMEONE (who shall remain nameless) decided he was
bored and started chewing the corner of his bed.
The zipper did not work after that.
He doesn't chew the new metal zipper.

Henry & Millie have destroyed every bed they've ever had: blankets, carpet, pillows in cases, duvets, old curtains, etc.......

I did once make a similar pillow in a case to the one mentioned on this thread, which lasted all of a couple of days before being disembowelled & shredded round the room, even though it was thick material.

So, frankly, I've given up. A friend of mine has given me several old pieces of hessian backed carpet and I use one of those at a time until they've unravelled it / chewed it (these at least last a while - a couple of months), and then throw the old one away and put a new bit in.

I don't know what H & M are so bad, but possibly because they egg each other on when left alone!
