I have this coworker who has been an assistant in the office I now manage for several years. Just this morning she looked at a picture I have of Mia and said I have a dog just like that. Then she asked me what kind of dog mine is. I answered a boston terrier and she said hers looks so much like mine...is it a boy or a girl. I tod her Mia is a girl and of course hers is a boy. Before I can even say a word she asked if I am going to breed her. I told her Mia is fixed and will never be bred. I got to hear the same old song and dance about how much $ can be made, etc. I plainly said breeding is so much more than throwing two dogs together, there is health testing and behavior & temperment issues to consider ( I also made a smart alek comment about how you should at least know the name of the dog breed you are trying to breed!). Then she started in on my pic of Rocky, and how she also has a boxer (hers is papered and was bought from a classified ad). I told her Rocky is neutered as well before she could even say a word....well then she floors me by saying her boxer and her poodle mated and she thinks they might be pregnant, do I want one. I just shook my head and lied saying I needed to talk to one of our doctors.

I cannot believe her. I had a hard time dealing with her for the rest of the day and am not looking forward to seeing her later this week!

Just venting...Dora

No shortage of dumb people in the world! Not a huge intellectual leap to think about all the puppies in the world already who don't have proper homes... why on earth would anyone want to create more?

Oh yay....boxerdoodles, or boodles, or poxers.....how creative. A new breed. Now she can ask for even more money for the puppies. What is that saying about "the hamster died but the wheel is still spinning?" People never cease to amaze me.

Please keep in mind when being critical of others that the Boxer and all other breeds came into being by cross breeding for specific purposes, including appearance.

The beginning of the developement of the Boxers as we know them today began in the mid 1800's, and wasn't recognized as a breed until about 1900.

Do a search on the origin of the Boxer breed, and you will find detailed accounts of how and why they were developed. For some reason, the board wouldn't accept the links I tried to post.

The original Boxers were white. The colors were bred into Boxers because the German military used them, and the color white made them stand out from their surroundings. They bred the color into the line for the same reason soldiers wear camoflage gear.

They were also bred for "bullbaiting" an extremely gory and gruesome practice. The undershot jaw, and the wrinkles or furrows under the eyes, as well as the strong neck had specific purposes.

The breed as it is now known and recognized has only been in existance for about one hundred years.

But for the "experiments" of some, we wouldn't have the Boxers we love so dearly today.

Hopefully I haven't offended anyone.

I understand where your coming from, but the "fad" experiments going on right now are just causing a bunch of high dollar mutts that will soon be filling shelters.

Yep, that's true. Actually, it's the case for most if not all dog breeds - they were created to fulfil a specific purpose. I suspect, however, that the only purpose most of the "doodle" dogs are being created for is to line someones pocket with the proceeds of the latest fad toy. In most cases there is little indication that serious efforts are being made to actually create a new and distinct breed.

Actually, the original boxers were NOT white. It is generally accepted that the white colour only appeared after the inclusion of the white bulldog, Tom, in the gene pool of the emerging breed. The bullenbeiser (which, incidentally is the ancestor of several breeds, not just the boxer) was brown or brindle. The white colour, however, has never been deliberately bred for - unless you count the modern practice of some breeders breeding for 'flash'.

They were also bred for "bullbaiting" an extremely gory and gruesome practice.

No, that is not true. It is the ancestors of the boxer that were bred and used for bullbaiting (both the bullenbeiser and the bulldog). The boxer itself never was. It was bred from the smallest of the bullenbeisers with the aim of creating a smaller, more agile dog for hunting - the pursuit and holding of smaller wild game. And that's still ancestors we're talking, not the actual boxer. As the dog evolved into the modern boxer (ie. the breed as we now know it) its purpose became one of guardian, working and companion (actually meaning escort) dog.

But for the "experiments" of some, we wouldn't have the Boxers we love so dearly today.

That's quite true - and well said. Personally I have no objection to the creation of new breeds, providing there is some purpose behind that creation. But it is not a 'breed' until such time as it has physical and temperamental characteristics that breed true (and as such, enables people to reasonably predict what they're going to get and thus choose a suitable dog).

I do, however, object to people just throwing any two (usually untested) dogs together in order to produce some puppies for sale. That's not the creation of a new breed of dog, it's just the creation of $$ to line your wallet.

PS: I don't know exactly why this site wouldn't accept your links, but I do know that it wouldn't be possible to post a link to a banned site... Could your links have been to BYB or broker sites that are likely to have been banned?

I don't have a problem with mixed breed dogs, just the "breeder" that knows nothing about breeding a dog. It is upsetting that there are people out there that think they have a clue. The outcome is unwanted dogs that have to be put to sleep.
