Duchess' 1st Loaf of Bread

Duchess will be four years old next month. She has been trusted out of her crate while we were gone since she was about 1 1/2. She is a very well-behaved girl. She does occassionally get into the trash if a door is left open, but that's about it...until tonight.

We left her for about 3 hours tonight. When we came home, we found what was left of a bread bag - torn to shreds - with not a single crumb of the 1/2 loaf of bread that had been inside it when we left the house. Duchess was in her crate - looking extremely guilty.

She is not (or WAS not) a counter surfer. To my knowledge, she's never taken anything off the counter until tonight. Now she's been "rewarded" for it, though, and I'm afraid this will become a habit. ~sigh~ Guess we'll have to make sure nothing is within her reach from now on.

Anyone know if half a plastic bag will hurt her?

Half a plastic bag could cause a problem if it was to cause a blockage. I'm not sure whether inducing vomiting would be a good idea or not. I would be inclined to phone the emergency vet and see what they say.

That's what I was worried about, Jan. I'm pretty sure it went down in pieces, though, because what was left of the bag was shredded, and there were tiny pieces of the bag laying around. Unfortunately, we are in a very rural area and don't have an emergency vet, but I will call my regular vet this morning.

Thanks!

ETA: I called the vet a few minutes ago and was told not to worry b/c the bag should just pass on thru.

Heidi is a bread fiend! She loves it, and I have to make sure I put it up when I'm gone or she'll tear open the bag and eat the bread. She's a great dog, and we all have our temptations, so I try not to get too upset  when she gets her a little snack during the day. Every now and then I forget to put the bread in the microwave! I hope Duchess didn't digest the bread wrapper and the remnants you found scattered were the missing half bag. Let us know how she's doing. :)

I have had to resort to putting my breadbox on my fridge - Naughty George & the kitties know how to gang up on the poor thing and get it off the counters. With the bags, I have developed a "watch and wait" attitude. If he isn't in distress, I don't panic. I just wait for it to run its course (literally).

Counter surfing...

We had a piece of leftover chicken the other night sitting on the counter and my mom was washing the dishes or something. Anyway, when I came back into the kitchen the chicken was gone! Now, there are 5 dogs in the house and only one cannot reach that high. We had to try to narrow it down and figured it was either Bailey or my mom's dog Gizmo. As soon as I looked at Gizmo sitting with his sides bulging out he was caught. I couldn't help but laugh.

Yep - Greta has pulled down an entire angel food cake & also an entire package of English muffins. She's crated when we're gone now, so it isn't an issue anymore. I'd just watch her & see if she passes it. Milk of Magnesia is what our vet gave Greta when she ingested TONS of foam from a couch cushion (and some down feathers), and it helped her poop it out. Watch out for plastic in the poo though! Hope Duchess is ok! :)
