Dry Nose, hair loss

My boxers Ali and Frasier both have very dry noses. So dry that every now and then their noses actually peels, or comes off in chunks, revealing new skin underneath. Their hair loss is right at their waists at the exact same spot on both sides. The vet says it may be thyroid related or kidney related. The both have lots of energy and eat like pigs, any suggestions?

Has the vet actually tested the thyroid or kidneys? I would definitely have the thyroid test done...its odd they both have the same symptoms though.What are you feeding? Nutrition pays a large role in the coat....

Those nose thing could be unrelated. My dog has always had a crusty dry nose, off and on for his whole life.

When it got bad I would put bag balm on it at night. That would moisten it up, and the crusty parts would peel off and reveal normal smooth skin underneath. Those nose part really could be nothing.
