Drinking from birdbath

Logan and Tyson are spending more and more time playing outside now that the weather is so nice. Tyson is crazy for water. Whether it is me or the neighbors watering flowers his little face is in there with his tongue slurping like crazy and his face soaked. Logan doesn't like drinking from the hose but now Ty has introduced him to the birdbath which Logi has never even looked twice at before. I try to clean it out everyday but I know there has to be gross stuff in there. Does anyone else have this probem? They both have water dishes outside and don't stay out for more than an hour at a time.

Any dangers from the birdie water I should know about? Thanks so much.

Spud does this too! I find it ironic because he demands the water in his bowl changed at least five times a day...if there's so much as a speck of something floating in it he'll bark at it until I put fresh water in there. Outside, however, he'll find the yukkiest water and happily wolf it down. Muddy puddles are currently the favourite! :confused: I try to stop him doing it whenever I can, but he tends to get there before me...no ill effects so far!

We have a bronze bird bath and Sophie thinks it's just for her. I try to clean it everyday and put fresh water in it just for that reason. She too, has her own water bowl outside (actually it's one of those hospital plastic dish pan things.) But she prefers the birdbath. Hubby says because it's easier for her to drink from, she doesn't have to bend her head down. appicon I hope it's not dangerous, but I suppose it can't be any worse than lake water or creek water.

I just moved my birdbath to the back yard. samson just loves it lovicon he thinks it is drinking water.

My Boxer Duke drinks from the bird bath as well. I would think that if you are changing it on a regular basis the chance for him getting sick is less likely. We dont change our water in the bath very often, and Duke manages to drink ou tof it when we are not looking. He has yet to get sick from it.

Yuck. Mine, too. They have 2 water bowls inside the house, plus a second outside. Where do they choose to drink? The mud puddles.....:rolleyes: go figure

We don't have a bird bath but I can't imagine it could be any worse for them than drinking out of the toilet. Especially if you clean it everyday.

Bird Bath caution

Well, I would be VERY VERY careful, especiall if this is a busy bird bath. We got a Belgian Shephard as a puppy, she played in the duck pond of the breeder. (Well the ducks pottied in the pond) I know this is extreme but you just never know. ANyhow, She drank from that pond and developed a fungus that attacked her liver. We lost her at 18 months. The vet was so upset because nothing worked to help her and he just couldnt understand what had gone so wrong on such a young dog. Anyhow they did a autopsy on her and found the liver problem. They ended up sending the tissue to UC Davis to have it investigated to see what could have caused it. It was that duck pond. I get nervous if Diezel drinks from the mud puddles.!

Birds actually can carry a number of really nasty bacterias and viruses some of which are contagious to humans and pets (West Nile Virus, E-Coli, salmonella, campylobacter, etc.). It really would be wise to keep your pups from drinking out of the birdbath just to be safe.

Cute story...sounds like they've all gone bird water crazy they can be so goofy sometimes. Sadie's in on that one too
