Okay so our lil Izzy got diagnosed with hookworms on Monday. We have two small children 2 1/2 and 8 months that had contact with her. This is worrying me to death. I have no family due to their choosing drugs over me I had to exclude them from my life. Anyways.... I dont have anyone to talk to about this so please if anyone can help at all....you know! Im worried that the kids or us will get this ourselves. Izzy stayed inside with us for a few weeks before she was diagnosed although I never saw anythign in her poo. Seeing as she is a pup she did have accidents inside, which were promptly picked up with Lysol wipes and properly disposed of. The hardwood floor was also cleaned each time she had an accident. I wish we had took her to the vet the day we got her :-( I called the breeder to make him aware of this....and "he already knew one of the pups out of the litetr had them." I said thanks for calling and informing us...and hung up. Anyway our pup is not allowed in our house. She is staying on our enclosed porch since yesterday. She was given meds yesterday at vet. Plus I gave Interceptor pill yesterday also. I have another dose to give in 2 weeks. She has passed worms in each stool today. The thought of putting her outside has killed us. It is 60-80 degrees during day and 55-65 at night. I planned on leaving her out until she gets a clean bill of health. Which I know people here are against. But I do not want to even risk that my Kids get this. Or us for that matter. Anyone dealt with these lil nasty things before?? The thought of if she isnt better in 2 weeks, after 3 doses of meds, saying goodbye has sadly entered my mind. We love her to death, but our children must come first. I am a germ-a-phobe anyway, so I maybe over reacting I know that....I just need some advice please! Im worrying myself sick. Even thought of taking our kids to doctor tomorrow and asking his advice and making sure kids do not have these things.......oh gosh, help!! Please! I have never felt so helpless in my life..........

Worms are a very common problem with dogs. 90% of the time puppies have them when they are brought home. Children do get worms (not very often) but it can happen. I do not believe that it is posiable to get them unless they ingest something that is exposed to the feces of an infected dog (or other aniamal) I certainly would not leave mine outside or ban them from the family over worms. But that is just me.

Just wanted to attach this website for you to read. It's very informative about hookworms! They are very common in dogs and have different treatments that can kill hookworms! It also provides some information regarding what happens when humans are infected by hookworms (as well as prevention tips) I hope this helps! As common as they are, I don't want to see this cause you to give up your baby! :(

You said you might be over reacting and this may sound harsh, but you really are. Worms are a very very common thing and are not a big deal. When I read the title of your post, I seriously thought cancer or some other life threatening thing.
The vet told you to leave her outside? This doesn't make sense to me at all. If i were you, I would go let your baby in and give her some lovin's, the worms are most likely gone after the worming and the interceptor. She shouldn't be banned from the house but even more so since she is so young. As far as contacing the "breeder," I am guessing this is a byb since you have your puppy and she is only 6 weeks old so therefore he wouldn't care. The pups should have been wormed before leaving their mama.

This didn't sound right to me either... We've never left our pets outside just for having worms! I don't see where leaving them outside would make any difference at all! The medicine and interceptors should have taken their toll already!

If you still feel you can't let her in, please find her a less germophobic home. Please don't put her down for something that most puppies have.

On a brighter note, recent studies suggest that kids who grow up with pets have strogner immune systems. Which totally makes sense.

Hoping for the best...

Perhaps a call to your pediatrician would make you feel better? Understand that you are kind of "grossed out" but when I think back on some of the things kids give each other (lice comes to mind-yuck) this is sort of the same thing. The meds will clear the pup up quick and while it is unfortunate the breeder did not tell you, as others have said this is not uncommon. This pup is so young she really needs to be with you-now if you want to keep her in specific areas of your house well that is fine and will help with house breaking anyway. Right now she needs human contact both for security and for socializing-the last thing you want to do is isolate her. If you can not get past that thehn you need to re-home her quickly as this is a very , very important part of her life and shapes the dog she will grow up to be. Overall this is a very short lived problem and will cleared up probably before you could properly rehome her anyway. But no matter what you decide long term that little one needs to be with you now :) Please let her in

I totally agree with this. I know people who bleach everything and are complete germophobes (nothing against them) and they and their kids are constantly sick. I on the other hand, am the complete opposite and am barely ever sick. I know people have different immune systems but it seems as though the ones who are worried about every little things being disenfected, they are the ones with low immune systems.

To be honest, if this is the worst thing your pup ever has, you will be the luckiest person around. What are you going to do if she starts to eat her own poo as they sometimes do? Like I said, nothing against germophobes, everyone is different but your pup is going to do some nasty things so you might as well get use to it.

I think its been adequatly stated here...but I have to say it again. Worms are truely no big deal at all and both of my puppies had them when they came home. The vet gave them a de-wormer and that was it. No one, including the child in the home where the ENTIRE litter was, contracted worms.

I have to assume when you say "say bye to our baby" you couldn't possibly mean put her down. I assume you mean give her away, and if you feel uncomfortable with worms, muddy paws, feces...well you might be in the wrong business. ;)

Please let that poor baby in the house. I'm sure you all will be perfectly fine.

Good luck! :)

I am sure your children are Ok while my dogs have never had worms my daughter got them from playing in a sandbox outside. I always deworm my animals just in case but after that instance I started deworming my kids too, call me a germaphobe but some kids are more suseptable (sp?) then others and since my 5 year old got them I wasn't taking any chances!!! Shes 20 now and worm free as long. Bring your baby inside and don't let your young ones play with her toys and such.
