Just a quick question how did you teach your dog to use a doggie door? We have a 5month old puppy and we want to get a doggie door because he's wanting in and out a million times in a row so this way he can do it!

Oh, sounds like a great idea. Sorry, I can't help. But I'm sure there are people here who can help you. Good Luck.

We bought a large Staywell doggie door from Ebay last summer, but never installed it :( My friend has the same door, it's so big that I can get throught it up to my hips !!! We crawled 1/2 way through it & would give the dogs treats when they followed us back out. Eventually they caught on & now use it constantly.

We first showed the puppy how to go through it by one standing on the outside with a treat and the other inside with the puppy and helping her go outside the door to get her treat. Our pet door does not have the flap. When we went to my mom's house that had a flap we had to show her how to use that one also, once she realized the flap doesn't hurt her she was fine with it.

our dogs were 8 and 11 months when we got the house with the doggy door. We didn't have to do a thing. The first day we went to the house with the dogs I let them go out the backdoor and they just came through on their own. (Beau doesnt like me to be out of his sight for too long ) They both came in slowly the first few days but have since adjust :) also they learned real fast to check and see if the "door" is covering the hole.

We installed a doggie door last year and wish we would have done it ten years ago. The magnets on the bottom scared the Chihuahua's at first so I put tape over them. It makes a clicking sound. When we brought Bella home last week the sound scared her also. So I put tape on it again and she is finally getting use to using it. I love it :)

My hubby and I would get on each side of the door with treats and call the dogs. Sometimes, my son would crawl through the door and they would follow, that made it a game. At first the were a little timid, but now they hit it like it isn't even there.

Good Luck!

Our training was easy. It took 2 McDonalds double cheeseburgers and within 10 minutes, Wilma and Em were trained. Now they come and go as they please while we are home. We confine them to the room the doggy door is in (the bathroom) and the hallway right off the room when we are gone. We close off this area with a gate. Doggy doors are the best!!!!!!!!

I don't blame the dogs, I'd go through the doggie door for two of those myself, LOL ;)

Doggie Door While No One's Home

QueenMum,

You mentioned that your dog can go in and out of the doggie door when you're not there. How high is your fence?

I read in another forum that some Boxer rescue groups won't let someone adopt who's planning on using a doggie door, and I wondered why. If the dog seems to behave outside, and using the doggie door isn't a substitute for love, affection, and other exercise with the dog, wouldn't it only be a benefit?

Thanks,
Mary
