dog harnesses vs dog collars

hi iam wondering if any one could give me a bit of advice iam thinking of geting spike a harness as when he sees a dog or someing intresting he pulls and he nearly chokes him self all the time and does not relise it he already collpised on me once before and my hubby said try a harness as he used to have wolf hounds he found them to work great on them and he is of in service for the un i cant ask him so i was wondering if you lovely pepole at bw would be able to help me what do you peffer to use collars or harness and if it is harness what kind

I tried the stopping trick whenever Luka pulled- two months of stopping and barely getting thru a walk and he still pulled It got to the point where my shoulder was hurting and he was gagging- he just can't control himself (wheather he's pulling to get to the bathroom area, another person, a leaf he wants to eat or the car). I got him just a standard nylon harness- I was afraid a gentle leader or anything over his muzzle would give people the impression he was agressive, mistaking it for a muzzle.
Anyway- it's awsome! I love it! We couldn't be happier! appicon Luka has been using a car harness since he was little, so he's used to it (he also helps me put it on :D) We can go for long walks now and better yet- I have SO much more control over him- when he sees a person/ another dog, etc I can easily steer him or stop his jumping.
(It also makes a great handle when there is no leash )

Tank always pulled like crazy with just a collar on walks. I got him a harness and its like he's a completly different dog, doesnt pull much at all now. I would recommend it.

I got Beau a new harness Monday. It is MUCH better than his collar. He used to pull me wherever he wanted to go. Now all I have to do is tug once and he stops. It's just a simple nylon one from Walmart because I'm afraid my mini dachshund and Beau might conspire to chew it off! I higly recommend a harness over a collar.

We also use a harness. On a leash she was a nightmare to walk with but with the harness she is so much better. She has become so use to her harness that when it is time to put it on, she knows the drill, first one leg in and then the other and then off we go.......................

Ditto on the harness as a good choice. Someone told me he would pull worse because the harness would give him leverage, but I too have found just the opposite to be true. Of course, we kept working on the "no pull" skill, but it just made it less painful for everybody!

yup harness all the way.... Guinness is MUCH better with the harness although he will still try to pull once in a while

I know I didn't start this thread but I appreciate it all the same... I was considering purchasing a harness for Brandy because of the same thing she will choke herself with the collar if she finds something of interest and the other dogs want to go a different way... I will have to look into getting one this weekend... THANKS

I would suggest an anti-pull harness. Layla has one and its excellent. It constricts under her legs when she pulls and causes her to stop. It doesn't hurt them, just makes them aware when they pull. They really can be bulls when out for a walk!!

Try a gentle leader. They are better than harness' b/c some Boxers want to even pull harder when they have a harness on. Gentle leaders are like horse halters and control the head instead of the neck like collars do. Jefferspet.com has them for a reasonable price. It works amazingly well with my pup. He has been able to go out in public more as a result and eventually the gentle leader will help in training him to walk on the leash more appropriately.
