Our eight week old puppy has been eating our cats food. we have had the cats for years, and never taken away their food or moved it. We dont want the dog to eat the food though. Should we move the food, take it away, or pen the dog off from the food? Either way the cats may get angry. we just want the cats to learn that they are not getting punished for something that the puppy is doing. Is there a happy medium?

I bet your only hope is to move the food! We put ours up on a shelf that the cats can get to! I think they enjoy tormenting the dog, "haha you can't get us or our tasty treats" Watch out for the aroma of kitty turds comming from your pups mouth, thye are even better than the food, or so Cassius tells me! Babygates Rock! We have them placed throughout the house to keep Cash from getting anything kitty related!

You are going to have to restrict access. I am not sure that there is anyway you can just train him not to eat it if it is sitting right there. From what I understand it is much more tasty to dogs than their own dog food. I moved my cats food to the top of the clothes dryer. She doesn't think she is being punished at all, in fact I think she has forgotten the original location of her food. It seems like it has been on top of the dryer her whole life as far as she is concerned. If your cats are anything like mine, food is food no matter where is located, as long as they can get to it....its all good! :D

we had to move things as well - coz shelby also loves kitty "crunchies" and there food - so we went and bought a moveable "work station" its like a kitchen bench on wheels - although not as big - her food is on shelf one and her litter is in shelf 2 and on the last shelf is a big bowl of water for shelby and lilly to share!! maybe you could find some thing like this ro even better get ur partner or hubby to wiz one up

Your going to have to move the food. We have our cat food on top of a 6ft high kitty condo. Matilda LOVES IT!!!! She gets to eat her food with Molly sitting right under the condo patiently waiting for little scraps she might drop every once in a while.
Your probably going to have to rethink kitty litter placement as well since it is know as a boxer delicacy. Good luck!!:D

Like everyone else, we have the food away from Scrapper behind a babygate where he cannot get to it. If he does get to it, he eats it all immediately and poor Roscoe gives me dirty looks and meows at me in the hall. It's much richer than dog food, to the extent that our babies even like it after it's been processed by the cat, digested and deposited in the "kitty roca" dispensing pan. Trust me, your cats would rather you move their food, than have empty dishes staring at them. And you might as well move the catbox, or get a hood for it, because otherwise you WILL find him with his head in there, or coming out with cat litter encrusted and hardened all around his teeth. Oh, that's fun to scrape out, yeah.
We had the same problem, dogs Love the cats food and the cats Love the dogs food. We have the cats food on the 2nd. floor and have a baby gate inbetween the kitchen and diningroom, that way the cats can jump over the gate and have the whole upstairs to themselves and the dogs can't get to the food. It has worked out great. Everyone is happy. Besides moving the food we also had to move their litter boxes, Madchen loved to get into them(yuck). We have 4 cats and 4 dogs.

Well I had to do something a little more extreme! I have a boxer puppy who loves to climb gates and a border collie who jumps over them like they werent there! So I had to put the cat food and litter in the bathroom and cut a kitty door into the bathroom door, so only the kitties can get into it! So far, my Border collie hasnt even tried to stick his head in, (hes afraid of getting stuck) and Angus my puppy is afraid of the swinging door!! You might want to consider my answer if you have a gate jumper.

I also installed a cat door on one of our bedrooms. That room houses the litter and food, but it also provides a Hammer free inner sanctum to Morgan, who isn't all that fond of him! Good luck, the cats will adjust!
