doesnt want to ride my car andmore?

I have a 3 yr old male boxer. He used to love car rides. The min I got my keys that would all he wrote and would be jumping around and just couldnt wait for the door to open. I would have him sit and wait till I gave the command to come and he would jump it was so cute. Now, I cant even get him to the door. My other boxer, female, doesnt and never got as excited as my male, but she will at least life her head up and wag her tail.

I cant figure out want got into to him. One think I do know that change about my car is that I took out the back seats and put in new used sits. That is when I started to see the difference. Could that be it?

Maybe it is the new seats he doesn't like, or I'm wondering if he hurt himself once when he jumped in the car and remembers it?

Raleigh was very hesitant for quite a while jumping in to my car because he had slammed his paw hard once getting in, he doesn't like getting in to my husband's truck, hesitates then jumps, so it could be a number of things.

I'd keep trying gently to get him in to your car and see if he'll go, good luck.

When I changed my car Harvey would not get into the back of it, its a bigger car! I would end up getting his front end in and then trying to lift his back end in and he is one big boy and heavy with it, not I might add he is overweight, but just a big dog.

Just co incidence I got some spare carpet mats to put down in the back of the car to help stop the hairs getting onto the upholstery. I went out one day with some chicken treats and kept giving him treats then put bits on the end of the hatchback area and back and forth we went to and fro the car giving the command to "hup" into the car. This day on the third go, he jumped in and never looked back. Now I dont know if it was to do with the spare carpet mats or the chicken treats or deciding he could do it afterall but something worked

Just in case the new car seats have a scent that he does not like - would you have an old mat from your house you could put in the car to encourage him to get in - the familys scent will be stronger on the mat as folk will have walked on it and it will maybe reassure your boy - just a thought

Oxford started to refuse to get in the car, because for a year, all his car trip were to go to the vet!! (ACL injury, surgery and complications)

sooo...

Now that his knee is better, we go to the park.. and Oxy is magically going in the car on his own again (little hesitation.. but i just have to say "come on Oxy , let's go PLAy at the PARK" and he goes in)

I agree with the above posts, go fun places and try to take something from the house with you. Last Dec. both my dogs and I were involved in a rollover car accident. After that neither of them wanted to go anywhere near a car....esp. because we had to get a new one after that too. Initially after that I would have to put them in the car, but little by little as we would go fun places etc. their fear has started to ease and they will mostly get in on their own again now. Still not excited about going places like they used to be....but they don't try to run away anymore and will get in.

Boxers dont like change...

From my 20 years dealing with them they dont like things like new stuff in the house, new cars...Even if you all of a sudden took a interest in riding a bike. Ive seen them attack a swingset if you have never been on one.

You can have the same carpet cleaner and get a new one and they attack it. I changed cars and I have had a couple just refuse to get near them

I really dont know of any way to make them deal with it...it just takes time.
