Shuti is 10 months old and has recently preferred to be by himself. He doesn't really cuddle with us as much as he use to and doesn't like to be face to face a lot. Everything we have heard of boxers liking to do he doesn't seem to like. Anyone have the same experience with their pup? Is it just a stage he is going through because of his age?

Tyson is 9 months and seems to not want to cuddle. If he sleeps with us, his butt is always near my head. Man that gas gets you every time. IMO I think it is just a stage.

Hi From NZ

I read through old threads on here a lot and I think I recall seeing a thread similar to this one, where the owner was concerned becuase their puppy was sitting with its back to them. The responses were people explaining that if a dog sits with its back to you, it's actually a good sign as it means they are relaxed and calm.

Not sure if anyone can expand on this some more? As to the butt in the face kathysboxer, that might be a whole 'nother analysis of body language, hahahaha :D

I admit I was a bit surprised that my boy wasn't superglued to me the way I'd gotten the impression all boxers do- he likes to have me within eye or earshot and will drape himself all over me if I sit on the floor, but is not a clingy dog demading lovin' and affection all the time, and I think I will end up being grateful for that! I spring surprise attacks on him when he's sleeping and smooch him all over so I can get my fix when I need it ;)

Oh yea, get that one all the time. I think that goes hand in hand with the dog sitting facing away from you, like Hi from NZ mentioned. It might just be a phase; or you could just be giving him a lot of attention.

I've recently moved out of my BF's house (we're still together however, just not living together.... story for another day :)) so the pups (especially Caney) are extra clingy now when I visit. I also remember that when we had a roommate with a boxer, she was extremely clingy -- I believe because he (roommate) was never home to spend time with her.

Basically, I think your pup is in his "comfort zone" with you. Possibly, you're not away from him enough to where he clings when you get home; instead he's reassured that you're not going anywhere. Just my theory :)

It could be a stage or it could be that he just doesn't like to cuddle. Cuddling is not a dog trait, it's a human trait and can sometimes be very uncomfortable for the dog. So don't take it personally if he doesn't like it. Rowdy has never been a cuddler.

Aww, I'm sure that's not the case. Some dogs are cuddly, some aren't. My last boxer put up with cuddles from me, if she was sitting still and I approached her, but she wasn't naturally a cuddly, in-your-face-please-play-with-me dog. But I know she loved me to pieces, she was just more of a quietly-sit-by-your-side dog (once she grew up a bit).

Just this morning Tyson scratched at the bedroom door (4am!!), so I got up and let him outside to pee, and he came back up to bed. Started laying beside me with his head actually where it should be, no his butt in my face appicon. That lasted a whole 5 min. before he went to the bottom of the bed. Downstairs, he sits by me on the couch if the other couch is occupied, but if not, he just sits on it. I do spend all my spare time with him. He is definately my shadow. If I'm in the kitchen making supper, he is either laying on the floor (usually in my way LOL) or within eye shot. I just figure he is an independent soul, but he has no problem with me hugging him or giving him tons of attention.

My Lily refused to cuddle until she was about a year old. And her way of cuddling now is to climb her front end up on my lap and lay her head on the crook of my arm. I can pet and kiss and nibble all I want..........but when she's done, she jumps off and never a cuddle til another day.

Guess she's using the "nothing in life is free" training method on me. I don't always earn a cuddle. LOL

Lola's quite aloof and rarely cuddles, it makes it even more special when she does come for a love though :)

SuzyQ also likes to push her front end in my lap and lay her head on my arm. She will come lean on our legs and loves to get hugs. But, not all dogs or all boxers are the same. Many dogs do not like to be hugged, I think they can interpret it as an intimidating gesture. They go through phases too, like skin kids. As they mature, they become more independant and play differently and interact differently. And at their energy level, may not want to slow down for silly hugs when they could be tearing around like a wild dog. The behavior you have at 4 mos plus, will probably change once past the 12 or 18 month mark. Some dogs will always stay more reserved and quiet.
