I know there are other posts about grass eating Boxers but all the searches that I've done don't address the issue that I'm having.

OK>..Otis loves to eat grass and a few times this has resulted in his vomiting his veggie buffet. From all the searches and reading the posts, I understand that this is not necessarily a bad thing for him.

My problem is that because my lawn needs some help, ie. fertilizer, weed killer, and insect control, I'm afraid that anything that we use can harm Otis. Now I understand that if we treat the lawn to keep Otis off for a few days (or how ever many days as necessary). I am more worried that whatever treatment that we use will actually be 'in' the grass and when he eats the grass, he will have then ingested some of the treatment. Does this make sense? I know if after a good rain/soaking the chemicals would wash down into the ground but doesn't the grass absorb these chemicals and retain in the grass itself? Hypothetically, I could have treated the lawn last week and then it rained heavily but the grass itself would absorb some of the treatment. Then if Otis eats that grass, could that make him sick?

We would like to know if anyone else's Boxers eat grass and if you treat your lawn, have they ever had any affects on them and what did you use.

Does anyone use an organic lawn treatment (if it exists) for fertilizing, weed killing and insect control that would not be harmful to the Boxers and skin kids. I'm more concerned about Otis since he does actually EAT the grass. Silly Boy!

TIA for any help or advice!!!!

Oscar eats grass all the time and from time to time he'll vomit also, but he's never gotten sick, once he gets it out of his system he's fine. I would try calling the vet and asking if they might know of any pet-friendly lawn care services. I'm thinking if you try a Environmentally friendly lawn care service they might be able to give you advice. I think any lawn care people will let you know if the product is bad for your pooch. I tried to do a search but had no luck either. Good luck! If you find anything out let me know. I will keep looking around in the meantime.

Grass!

Well, I have never heard or read anything about Boxers eating grass, but my Sadie eats grass all the time! She is only 12 wks old and she loves it. We also treat our grass with all kinds of stuff. The only thing I've noticed about her eating the grass is when she eats it, not even 1 minute later she poops it out! We also worry too, and that is something we can not stop her from doing. My husband tells me it's kind of a laxative for dogs? (Beats me!!) I'm glad to hear someone else's Boxer does that.

My yard is all rocks (desert landscaping) and i sometimes have trouble with ants and such. Katie eats/sucks on the darned rocks so i was worried about her eating bug spray. a friend of mine who used to work at a nursery suggested that i take a bar of ivory soap, melt it into the sprayer bottles for a hose, then spray the yard with it. the soap will kill the bugs and not harm animals. since i make my own homemade soaps, i use the water from washing my pots on the yard. i think it works. my friend also had a solution for weeds and such, but i cant remember. you might want to check at a nursery, they may know.

Reasons for eating grass

The reason dogs eat grass is still unknown. Even in veterinary school they say there are thousands of reasons for dogs eating grass. One hypothesis is that dogs eat grass to get extra fiber in their diet. After the fiber is absorbed into the body the extra elements of the grass are expelled in the form of vomit or poop. Treating your yard might go either way as to hurting your boxer. I would contact your veterinarian or your local company that treats grass to ask about the chemicals used in the treatment.

Wow! Glad that Otis isn't the only one to eat grass! lol

I did ask my vet, yesterday, when I went to pick up some Frontline for Otis and all they suggested was that I go to Home Depot or the nursery and ask.

I plan to go to the nursery this weekend but I thought I'd post and see if anyone else had any luck with specific products or methods and their Boxers.

If anyone else has anymore suggestions, I'd love to hear/read!

I'll post if I find out anything useful

Thanks!!

I'd love to hear any solutions to this as well b/c our girl eats EVERYTHING in our backyard so as of right now the backyard grass is a mess.
At least the front yard is nice and green and not chewed/dug up!

Somedays Ginger eats grass more than others. The other week we put down fertilizer and I just only let her do her business and brought her in those days. She was not a happy camper but she was not out there to eat it and get sick. Hopefully you can find something that is safe.
