I've seen a lot of dogs do this, and yeah... it is funny! Spotty does some good wind sprints this way (he won't poop in the yard, so we are usually off leash up in the hills).
The scraping of the ground is a sign to other dogs to "notice my posting here...." Their poop is also used to mark territory, just like their pee. You may notice that they may scrape the ground after a pee, too.
I just love the way Spotty has a BIG yawn/grin while he is doing this & bolts around..... Hubby calls it a dance... I just go "YAAAAAAAA, go,go,go,go,go,go,go!!!"

I always thought animals 'bury' their poop to make it more difficult for predators to track them. Anyone ever heard this? I think it's just a trait that has, for the most part outlived it's usefulness but just like turning in circles to 'mat down the grass' in this evenings chosen sleeping spot, they just can't stop doing it.

Completely Boxer Crazy
When Xena does the boxer burn we always say the Devil's chasing her again.
Lately she's been doing it before AND after #2. She races around the yard, whirls in circles a few times, then bolts to the house. It's really funny because we just put some oil-based sealer on the deck and she slides and skids all over (and sometimes even crashes into the house!).
